Key programing

I have a Toyota Camry with only a valet key,one Toyota dealership says if I purchase a blank transponder key from them get it cut using the valet key to go from then take the car back to the dealership and they will be able to program the new kew from the old valet key.So I took on their advice only to be told by the service adviser that they were unable to pick up a code from the old key and there must be a fuse gone which is dificult to get to and they will need the car for at least 5 hours,but it can be done ?
So I contacted another dealership and they said they can not program a key without a master key and I would be in for a new ECU which comes with a master key for me to have more than one key to the car.
Does any one know which if it is possible to get a spare key programed without a master key and not going through the expence of a new ECU ?

im going through the same thing now , Toyota say the only way is to buy the ecu transponder unit around $355, each key costs $377 plus labour to install and program, then you need to get the keys cut from the barrel otherwise they wont work in the glove box . I purchased the car from ILLAWARRA TOYOTA without knowing about no master keys , asked them to fix the problem they virtually told me to f... off not there problem , so contacted fair tradeing and it turns out it is illegal for anyone to sell a car with a key that does not operate every function of the vehicle, so thanks to fair trading ILLAWARRA TOYOTA are paying for the problem to be fixed at my local dealer. i can tell you that they sort of dont like me now and havent returned a single phone call . definately would never deal with them again

thanks for the reply I also purchased this car through a car yard so I will give fair trading a call then approach the place I purchased the car from and see if they will come to the party without getting the same attitude you received.

I'm pretty confident you won't be liked at all. But so long as the issue gets fixed and you never have to deal with them again... who cares if they don't like you. Their problem, not yours

Car yards are regularly dealing with this issue. I know of several examples where they have been pushed to rectify a keyless entry issue, and get around it by installing a cheapy $50.00 alarm system that has remote fobs.

Not what I would want, if I was in your situation.

phoned fair trading and apparently i dont have a leg to stand on.Now that I am legless does any one want to buy some old shoes / boots need the funds to go towards an additional key

Why dont you have a leg to stand on ? The car dealer has to supply you with a key that can utilise all the functions of the car , including locking the glovebox and remote entry if that was fitted to the car as original equipment , fair trading in newcastle are totally on the buyers side as far as they are concerned if you only get a valet key then the dealer has supplied you with a faulty or limited use vehicle , its the same as buying a tv and finding out the remote dosent work you are enititled to get 1 that works at the sellers cost. dont give up keep pushing the dealer to fix the problem and if all else fails a bit `bs` with the dealer works just mention fair trading and the fact that the key does not operate all functions of the vehicle . ring the dealer and start with the person that answers the phone tell them the problem and ask to speak to management.
