General consensis appears to be either Stihl or Husky and I agree! I would lean towards the Husky(yep, got mine) only on the basis that all the pro fallers and loppers etc round here use them.Good enough to earn a living with must stand for something! Otherwise just pick the colour that goes best with your eyes!

I have blue eyes which suggests the Makita version so that does NOT help.

What model Husky do you have?

the only thing i don't like about the husky is that in some models the engine is rubber mounted , it may not vibrate as much but it never feels like youve got control of it.

Rob, Have you also considered life insurance? I would hate to think Lea would struggle when.. ooops should have said.... IF your not around.

PS I would just check the chain VEWY VEWY carefully before letting her rip, she might sabotage it and collect the insurance money.
PS have you seen a show called "Ax men"? Now they got some real mens chainsaws - but short of a few fingers/hands in the meantime.

I'll throw in one from left field for you Rob, I have a Stihl chainsaw but it is not a normal chainsaw, it is an extension for my brushcutter. I unclip the brushcutter head and then attach the chainsaw. For 4WDriving only it is probably not the best but for around the home trimming tree branches and the like it is fantastic. It is fairly light and not overy large as it can be carried in two pieces, probably a bit longer than the average chainsaw even in half though.

All depends on whether you want it for around the home or just in the bush, anyway I would agree with the concesus of Stihl or Husky, have used both a lot many years ago and wouldn't think one was better than the other, so maybe check them both out and have a look at the brushcutter option when in the stihl store.

                  Cheers Andrew

I have a husky that I bought about 8 years ago, and has to be the best 2 stroke tool I have had. Also I have friends that are tree toppers and they recommend huskys. For the little extra it is a one off purchase and I believe you pay for what u get

Get a Stihl, the smallest or second smallest they sell. You do not need a huge bar (bad choice of terminology me thinks), as even with a small one you can cut through anything, it will just take longer. I have had mine 10 years, lots of work on trips and around the home, always starts second pull (as a good 2 stroke should). You need to learn how to pull apart and clean after each trip and sharpen and adjust chain after every use or every second use at the most. Easy once you know how.

A few key points on insurance:
If you are insured, you are more attractive dead, so as a form of "life" insurance, don't be insured.
If you want to benefit from death, insure someone else, like SWMBO for instance. Imagine that, no more pain, no more whinging, heaps of free time to do what you want when you want and you get paid big bucks for the privilage. My idea of Nirvana really.

OK guys I'm thinking 18inchs on the blade or bar as they call it. I'm used to handling 18 inches, even if its in my dreams. Blade/bar wise is that smallish?

I have the Stihl MS-180C (Mini Boss). It's the 'easy-pull' version of the MS-180. It requires startingly little effort to fire it up. It's been used heavily around the yard (knocked down around 30 big trees) and just last weekend I used it on the trails. It's small and easily fits in the car. It came with a fitted-case, some sort of XMAS deal, and is worth its weight in gold.

BTW, it doesn't need to be big... a small chainsaw can take down big trees. I love the fact it easily fits in the back of the Prado, so smaller is better imho. (It's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it. )
