  • Which tow rope?

Ok, so I broke my old steel rope tow rope the other week and have been looking for a new one. There only seems to be two on the market, a cheap peice of orange rope with some crap shackles at about twenty dollars and a blue and white bungy cord with a cheap hook on both ends for around the same price. Both look extremely cheap, nasty and dangerous to me.

None of the 4x4 shops seem to market anything.

What do you guys use / recommend?

    Cheers

Go to a rope or lifting tackle business (Bullivants or similar) and have a chat. It's not too expensive to get them to splice loops into each end of a suitably rated piece of dyneema or whatever you choose and then you can use rated shackles.

      Cheers,

If you have an old snatch strap laying around you could use it, just don't drag it on the bitumen they wear through rather quick I hear.

          I'm using it for towing??

A snatch is a bit long for towing a vehicle as it gives the impression there is a gap between the cars and another may try and pull in. Getting one made seems to be the go I think.

Snatch strap will have too much 'spring' grab your winch extension strap and if its too long double it over.

I was faced with this same dilemma last week. Clutch died in the Rodeo and I needed to get the thing home. Choice of towing or driving home clutchless. Unfortunately the old length of sisal rope (about 50mm diameter) that I used to use had died towing one too many tractor out of a bog. Snatch straps are really not an option and the commercial ropes on sale at servos were not doing it for me. Sadly there were not nice noises coming from the bellhousing when the engine was running so I took the third option and got a mate to tow it home on his car trailer. Let's know what the poly rope costs if you go that way.

I have found a length of about 6mm steel cable which I could get spliced up but steel cable tends to be very harsh on vehicles when taking off, cornering etc due to the lack of give. Does anyone know of a good rope that has a little bit of give in it that would be suitable for the purpose? I might visit a yacht shop and see what they have. Some springer line might be ideal.
