  • rounded off bolt head on bash plate

So I thought it was time to clean out the mud from under my bashplate . Its the first time I have needed to remove the bash plate for my 120 and alas I am unable to, looks like the previous owner or person who last serviced it has managed to completely round off one of the bolts at the back of the plate.
I've been doing my own oil changes for a while and never removed the plate.

Any one know of a way of removing it, bearing in mind that its slightly recessed into the plate itself.

I have a heap of mud up in there that I need to get out.

As above or tack a rod to it with a mig, also if you have a smaller old socket you could try bashing it on with
a hammer if it will fit.

I did think about that, but there isnt enough room to get a good enough grab on the bolt head because it is recessed in the plate a bit.

I would start with a very big dose of penetrant eg. CRC, WD40, RP7 or Lanotec.
You then might have to source some vice grip pliers as AMTS has stated above, it may need to be a pair of the pointy nosed type.
Once the vice grips are fixed to the bolt head the use of a shifter on the vice grips can do the turning.
Those bloody Toyota bolts that have a recessed head have caused me grief previously. not enough meat on the bolt head.
Also a little bit of percussion can help loosening things up, a hammer and a punch are the required instrument. Oh and some eye protection.
                Cheers Troy

I have had some sucess with this issue using Metrinch sockets, these are designed to suit both metric and imperial sizes and as such actually drive on the flats of the bolt head or nut.
Also give the bolt head a good clout with a drift and large hammer first, then as mentioned tap a smaller socket or metrinch if you can get one. Other wise try a single hex Snap-on flankdrive socket but always give it a clout first as the shock helps break the tension.

Irwin make a set which are like a set opposite to a easy out. They are designed to grip the outside of a rounded bolt head.

                      http://www.irwin.com/tools/browse/sc...olt-extractors

They work really well , will even remove capheads

ok thanks for the tips guys, went down to Bunnings and got a set of 'easy outs', did the trick first time. Now if only I had the money to grab a set of AMTS bash plates .

On the plus side I did manage to get half a tonne of dirt and mud out from under there...
Any ideas where to get a replacement bolt from? I did try my local autoparts store but they had nothing that matched the thread.

Glad to hear that you got that bolt out Andrew.
Most Repco outlets have a range of those little grab packs with various bolts ect.
Failing that United fasteners on Duncan Rd. @ Dry Creek would see you right.
I would guess that the bolt would be M8 x 1.25 mm pitch.
Grade 8 Bolts are my replacements for Toyota crap.
Suggest replacing the rest while you are at it, and apply some grease or never-seize.

                            Cheers Troy
