  • Maxtrax - Are they worth it?

Im fairly new to 4WD (did a lot as a kid) and am starting to shop for accessories as they come up on special. Mostly going to be doing sand driving (Fraser, Moreton, etc) and am keen to hear some feedback on the use of Maxtrax from other members.

So are they worth it? and secondly have many of you found 2 to be enough or have you needed 4? Any help is greatly appreciated as they are on special at the moment at Rays Outdoors and I might be heading down tomorrow to grab some.

    Thanks in advance.

For sand yes they're worth it, I'd start with 2

      They're fantastic.

I was bogged past the chassis on Fraser the other day.

Passenger side of vehicle hit some super soft stuff and sank. Couldn't open the door even. Drivers side was up to the chassis.

With a few shovels of sand out behind each rear wheel and some generous use of the right foot the maxtrax got us out.

Only problem was finding them after. They'd buried themselves under 2 foot of sand.

I have the lanyards. But you can't keep them on the maxtrax when they're on you're roof and I couldn't be bothered, I could see a huge front moving in and I wanted to get out of there.

My advice would be if you like the look of them and don't mind spending the extra money go for it but if you don't have the cash get tank tracks they are just as good.
Can't use them as a bridge though...

Worth every cent especially with stores discounting them like Ray's.

They have so many uses other than sand I feel they are worth every cent handed over.

If you can get the TV show "all 4 Adventure" they use them a number of times to up in the northern territory to get out of some serious bogs.

The traction control on our rental jeep while over in the states got me bogged in the Mojave deserts soft sand. I tried to rock it back and forward but just dug deeper. The Maxtrax had me out quick as a flash.

Wooley, I have the lanyards attached and sandwiched between the maxtrax when on the roof racks.

What is the best way to carry maxtrax on roof rails? Is there a mount or is it best to tie them on?

That's way to sensible an option. I did think of that but didn't worry as I didn't think they'd be burrows too deep after use (how wrong I was!)

I'll have to dig around in the glovebox and attach them now.

There is a mounting pin set available which isn't bad. I've got a set however haven't actually used them yet.

Currently my maxtrax are zip tied on which is working well.

However the pins would make them much more convenient. and they allow you to lock them.

Are they worth it? Bloody oath!. Used repeatedly while snatching my rig out of some nightmarish soft sand at Salt Creek in SA.

                            Maxtrax about $300 a pair
2009 Grande with one or two mods, lets say significantly more than $70k.
Its an easy equation when I believe I was not getting out without them!

Yep the Maxtrax are great, for sand driving I would invest in a set of these before a snatch strap. I have used mine many times now, more often on others than myself though. If flat country and no trailer 1 pair would work most times, add a trailer or big dunes and a second set would be handy.

                              Cheers Andrew
