    OOPS thats "VEHICLE" fires

Given our friends recent experience with the electronic rust protection device causing a car fire, and other experiences of electrical shorts in other discussions on thisforum, tthe following web linj has an interesting discussion about the causes of truck fires that might priove interesting to folks, especially those making electrical modifications etc

    "Sometimes a heavy electrical load,
such as a refrigerator, is connected
to a light gauge circuit and the fuse
rating is increased. If the wiring gets
hot due to the high current level,
there is a risk of fire."

    "Electrical fires should not happen
    on circuit-breaker (or fuse) protected
circuits. If they do the protection is
poorly designed or has been modified.
    The protection level is sometimes
inadequate when a light gauge wire
    (say for instrumentation purposes)
is taken off a heavy current circuit.
A fault on the light gauge wire is
    not adequately protected."

      'All electrical connections to the

        "vehicle fires"!!!

        Gday brogers

I did a search on wiring before latching onto your thread which was a "very" hard choice on who's thread to latch onto as there is Soooooooooo many different threads on this subject everywhere!!

I hope that you don't mind that i chose yours to latch onto as it seems to be a good follow-up on yours and is in the "general" for "All" vehicles concerning this subject

Clearly using the correct cable for the load rating helps

Main page http://www.fridge-and-solar.net/more.htm is a good read but the

"Collyn Rivers wrote a good article on this subject and it’s well worth reading" is better!
        http://www.fridge-and-solar.net/wire.html

I found some of the findings in this above thread disturbing on the wiring ratings in the "auto cable" industry as i "thought" ("I thought" appears to be a common problem these days!) it was naturally a global/national standard "ISO" (International Standards Organisation) for "All" cable sizing?...... Apparently not!!

        Cheers

I'm sorry, but it really annoys me, is it really truly honestly necessary to make the first three comments in your own thread?!

Should't this thread be in the Jeep Forum
97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

No, it wasn't a Jeep, and a car fire can. and has been caused by electrical modifications to Prados. In the instance of my friend, a car fire was caused by an electronic rust protection device that had a fault, and it was connected to the battery via a red wire...without an in line fuse....Lesson here, everyone check your electronic rust protection device and ensure that the power connection to the battery has an in-line fuse. At least one major manufacturer of electronic rust protection devices require an in-line fuse, but not all installers use an in-line fuse.

Anyway, the device manufacturer has agreed to refund costs for the vehicle repair, but it has taken a few months.

Check the wiring folks, a fuse may just stop your car from burning to the ground !
