  • Winch started wincing randomly without any input

During my trip to Snowy mountains suddenly midway through Deddick trail I heard my winch working for couple of seconds and stopped while I was driving. I stopped and went to check, noticed that the cable was tight but winch wasn't working. I stayed for minute and just as I was going to leave the winch started winching. The remote was in the glove box and I couldn't figure what the heck is going on.....

Quickly disconnected it from the battery but by the time it winched couple of times for a second or two....

The hook was attached to the high lift jacking point and it dragged the edge of the point a bit....

Didn't had a chance to looking to anything because of work and probably wont till the weekend.. Just wondering anyone experienced something similar....

First thing I'm thinking of doing is have switch to disconnect the winch when I'm not using it...

Radio receiver probably has gotten some water in it.

I have mine wired through a switch that turns of power to the radio and relay unit
    when not in use.

    Cheers

Try an exorcism. You can do it yourself or alternatively I hear the Roman Catholic Church offer a discount to paid PP members in the Bungalow section :P

I was going to (and should) fit an isolator, but have not.
I mounted my control box behind grille so it's not out for the kids to play with.
But I do leave winch in neutral,so to prevent damage incase there is a problem.
If there is I want to know about it, so I can fix it.
I'd rather hear it running in neutral and know there's a problem, than find out when I need it.
The book says leave it in neutral when it's not in use.

I ended up replacing the whole winch with a Tigerz11 2 speed. The old one was a very cheap Cable Trex.
The problem I had leaving it in neutral was, It will unwind itself over time... (may be ropes are good at this)
TigerZ has a cut off twist switch in the cable which I thought pretty cool.
