  • Check your fuel lines

Coming home last night on the expressway when I noticed the strong smell of petrol. Next minute cough splutter, no engine. I'd just filled up and my first thought was "water in the fuel". I managed to roll off the expressway, doing about 110k, onto the first exit, and come to a stop. As I got out I noticed a long trail of fuel behind me and a large puddle under me.
I carefully lifted the bonnet to find fuel everywhere, it was even dripping of the soaked bonnet insulation. I grabbed my CO2 extinguisher and cooled down the exhaust manifold and then called the FB.

It took about three minutes for the Fire Brigades to turn up and they used three of their foam extinguishers to cover the fuel on the road and under my Prado.

After all the excitement I was able to find the cause .... a fuel line from the filter can mounted on the inner guard had come off, spraying fuel everywhere. I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect that it may have not been put back on properly at the last recent service. I was able the put it back on, although it required some force for it to locate securely.

I'm glad it ended this way, as I'm sure it could have been worse.

Not a nice situation to be in, it sounds like you had a pressure build up in the fuel line, the weakest point to let the pressure out is at a connection of a fuel line... What causes this, can be many things, but it sounds like you may have a faulty fuel filter, could be a blockage inside it, (if it is on the line pre-filter), if it is after the filter then it could be as simple as the clamp not being tightened enough. Glad it all didnt go up in smoke.

I tend to think that it was not put back on securely as it is a spring clip that holds it, not a screw clamp. It was only serviced last week which included all fuilds and filters. I am glad it did not go up in a puff of smoke.

When you said "a fuel line from the filter can mounted on the inner guard had come off", it sounded like it was a diesel, what filter is on the inner guard??

geez...you are a lucky man! Get a freakin lottery ticket! Why it did not burst into flames no idea.

I would be concerned you could have a faulty fuel filter as well...I would get another to be on the safe side but possibly make the dealer do it considering the events and recent service. They would be concerned and would not want to take the risk of not replacing everything.

Just checked mine all seems ok no fuel smell no moisture. I hate those plastic attachments, I havnt even looked at the filter before but its the same set up commodores use only theres are just above rear diff, prick of a spot use to get covered in fuel when ever I changed the filter. I wonder if the old tool I had for the commodore will fit this one ?? will have to see if it fits next time the filters due for replacement. Not sure what would have caused it to come off after a week of running around ?? Would have though if it wasnt on properly from the service it would have been leaking from day one ?? Bazza was it the one under neath or the top one that come off ?? I dont like how they just swing around on there, seem so loose..Maybe it wasnt clipped on properly from when it was done and just a bit of vibration has made it come write off ?? You would think it would have been seeping if it wasnt on properly ?? Cheers Steve

Ahhh, the 120 has the fuel filter under the bonnet, unlike the 90 where it is under the body onthe chassis rail. Bit of a silly place really, So where is the 150 fuel filter, has it been put back under the body or is it still in the engine bay.
