  • Plenty Highway

    Hi,
First time posting on this forum so assuming this is the right way to as a question.

Can anyone give me some info on driving the plenty highway, will be in Sep this year. has anyone done it recently or in Aug / Sep other years.

Have a 120 gxl diesel with customer build camper trailer, OME suspension and Snorkel.
Have driven GRR and the cape.

Travelled it in a September a few years back now. It had plenty of stones and plenty of flies when I drove it in an 80 series, but not with a trailer. Only 1 puncture, do not travel too fast in areas of stones when they are 5cm or bigger. Travelled west to east.

Check that fuel is still available as I think one place no longer stocks fuel, it was a bit to the west of the Qld border, cannot remember the name now.

    Yowie.

Boulia and Jervois Station (Phone: +61 (0) 8 8956 6307) will be your fuel opportunity (if needed) until Gemtree and Alice.

If you can go to Harts Range in August for the races - the place comes alive.

Good fossicking around Harts Range area, and beautiful country. There is a track that can lead you around through Arltunga and Ruby Gap if you want a scenic route. Ruby Gap on the Hale River is great camping.

The Plenty Highway is exactly that - a highway! Watch out for animals, your speed and drop your pressure slightly. Well worth it - have fun; its unavoidable around here!!! It will be dry that time of here - have some type of sock in the snorkel to catch the dust.

Or for a variation, try the Sandover Hwy to the north of it. I drove it in July 2011 and it was a great trip. The road is lightly trafficed and kept in good condition for the various Aboriginal communities along it. It is only about 100 km longer but has no fuel- not a problem with 180 l tanks! Neil

Drove most of it in January this year. (West East and back). Used the conection through Uranangie which was mainly 2 wheel tracks through grass. Rest was good gravel road.
Dune colour GLX with Option pack, Bull bar, Tow bar, Cargo barrier.
