  • Out of balance

Never have I seen so many wheel weights added to a wheel to balance it ?? Now this is either bad for the coopers or the rim is out of whackClick image for larger version

Maybe the tyre needs to be rotated on the rim, or the tyre is rooted. If the rim was buggered it would have run out and you'd never be able to balance it.

I've seen that before on a MT tyre. The sales person tried to claim that MT's always needed balancing like this. The bloke pushed the matter and it turns out it was a bad batch. They gave him a replacement set that balanced up fine.

It is the tyre, Cooper and BFG are having problems with their tyres ATM, as they will not ballance up properly, this has been happening now for the last 4 months, which is probably why BFG is hard to get ATM, they are waiting for them to sort it out.

So the point is, do not buy that tyre & rim, as the tyre is obviously faulty.

The rim would be perfect to buy, just the tyre is not.

You're making a huge asumption there, the rim could be out as well.

Well, rims dont go out of balance, and it has no marks of damage on the rim.

Thats very old school and cheap balancing with bashed on lead weights to an alloy wheel. I would not have accepted it, you don't bang weights on to alloy wheels to balance them.

Decent tyre fitters only use self adhesive weights these day's so as not to damage alloy rims.

Rims won't go out of balance -unless a chunk breaks off- but they can be out of balance from factory.

I have run quite a few wheels without tyres on wheel balancers and they are always out a little, some quite a bit. Cheap aluminium wheels were always the worst, probably due to inconsistent casting. I guess the steel ones were out due to uneven welds.

There were some early HSV wheels that were cast so bad they were cracking due to large air bubbles in the wheel, which would put it way out of balance and just plain dangerous.

You can only do so much with those stick on weights.

Judging by the amount of lead there, he had no choice but to fit the weights to the outside to get it to balance.

Some fitters also use the internal ballast although I'm personally not so keen on that system.

You can do far more and be more accurate with stick on weights then bashed on lip weights.
