  • question about door locking

    Hey all,
just purchased an 05 Prado and the other day whilst standing next to my car talking to someone the car automatically locked the doors, I touched nothing. I told the guy I was standing next to and just opened the door closed it and in less than 1 minute or so the doors automatically again.
I have since tried to get the doors to auto lock again and for some reason it has not happened. I have looked through the manual and can't find anything about such a system. Its a petrol GXL
Anybody have some light they can shed on this for me as to what may have happened in the first instance or what I have not been able to replicate since.

    Cheers

With the car locked, press the unlock button on the key ... don't touch anything, just stand there and wait.

In approx 30 seconds the car will automatically lock itself again. I haven't checked the manual but it is a feature of the Prados (and perhaps a number of other Toyos).

I find the buttons on the key quite sensitive as well - if they are in my pocket and I lean on the wrong angle - I often set off the panic alarm - I've even locked it while crawling around inside cleaning it. ops:

    Cheers

Nah, I think I've read a post on here somewhere ... where the car won't lock itself if the keys are inside the cab ... something about the transponder in the key.

Only way to test a theory is to try it

        Wind the window down.
        Lock the car.
        Wait a coupla minutes.
Unlock the car, with the unlock button, and just chuck the keys inside on the seat.
In theory ... it shouldn't automatically lock itself

BTW ... Hang onto your spare key ... just in case it winds the window up and then auto locks ops:

        Cheers

Time is 20 seconds in the manual, ONLY if you do not open any door after unlocking the vehicle.
If you open a door it will stay unlocked until you lock it manually.
(So impossible to lock keys in vehicle).

i think you'll find a lot of cars that have keyless entry do that.

I've had fords, holdens, toyota's and mitsu's all do the same thing, japanese, aussie and euro..

it's sort of a "why'd you unlock me if you didn't want to get it" so it re-locks.

It made so that if you hit the button as you walk away accidentally it will re lock itself.

That makes sense and that is exactly what it does

                      Hey Ray

My Prado has an aftermarket alarm added.

What I find is that, if the car is locked, and you press the LOCK button again, it sets off the alarm.

Perhaps its a deliberate feature to give people, when confronted in a carpark, another way of gaining the attention of passers-by.

Who knows .... its just easier calling it a panic alarm .... rather than typing a paragraph long explanation.

                      Cheers

Odd, on mine hitting lock the second time deadlocks the doors?

I wonder if it has been installed funny? Panic is normally a press and hold.

Grande only feature (along with factory alarm), GXL's don't get the deadlocking feature (according to the owners manual).
