  • Portable Water On Tap

    Gday all.

I'd been looking at a few different setups for water in the Prado. I wanted it to be portable (so I could take it out at the camp site), it had to be able to be lifted by the wife easily, and it had to be cheap & easy. I have a couple of 20L water containers, but can be awkward and heavy when they're full.

I got the idea (like most ideas I get) while having a couple of beers...

I was looking at a few camper trailer kitchens on a 4WD Action DVD, and noticed a few which were pump action. I remembered having seen them before at BCF or somewhere relatively cheap. I thought about installing one into the lid of a standard water container that you could just swap lids when that one was empty. I looked at the containers I had. but noticed that the lid was on an angle, so the water would spray back almost on itself.

Then I was in Super Cheap Auto the other day... And I noticed they had 20% off... And I noticed that they had 10L water drums that had a flat lid... And I noticed that they had the manual pump on the shelf....

    TA-DAH! Water containers done.

This is the one with the pump in the lid. I just need to add a bit of water tube to go from the bottom of the pump to the bottom of the container (And cut a "V" in the bottom of the tube) to get all the water

I got 2 containers so that once one gets empty, I just swap lids and it all works perfectly well.

I can't see that we'll use more than 20L for daytrips, and for longer trips, I will just take the 20L as well & top up the 10L ones as required. I tested out the pump, and it works brilliantly. The water comes out at a decent rate, so shouldn't be an issue filling water bottles from it.

All up, I'm really happy with how it turned out, and it's cost me about $50 all up. Got to love that!

Good job, do you need an air breather hole or does the tap handle that side of things?

        Did a similar thing Fishin_Dan.
Worked out really well on last trip, could sit it on table and fill bottles,
sat nicely in back of Prado ready to use, wasn't to heavy to cart around by hand either.

MLC - I'm not sure to be honest. I tested it once to make sure it worked, and it didn't seem to distort the container. Will give it a decent test once I sort out the hose.

Travis - glad to hear it worked well

What's more, you will even be happier if SWMBO is happy.
