  • LPG availability in the outback?

    Hi

Looking at buying a dual fuel petrol Prado 120 for some outback traveling but wondered as to the availability of LPG outside the metro areas?

Should we stick with twin petrol tanks or is petrol/gas a workable idea?

    Gday MalcomM

Here is a link to track cheapest fuel but you can also use it to see if any LPG on destination.

Select your product and postcode and bingo

If you don't select a postcode you will get a squillion servo's Australia wide.

    http://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au/fuelw...ages/home.jspx

Or trip planner might be better
    http://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au/fuelw...p_planner.jspx

I figure if the sight is for tracking the cheapest fuel then at least you know that the servo's are still operating and when new servo's pop-up as it does up-date regularly cheapest prices.

    Cheers

      Thanks Skywalkerrun

How do you get it to show anything but WA?

Enter Sydney to Innamincka and it shows Perth.
Enter 3000 to 3020 and its shows Perth.

Is it really meant to show all Oz as its a WA gov site?

      cheers

        Gday MalcomM

I just tried it and also ended up in W/A??

        That sucks!!!

        I went to trip planner:
        http://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au/fuelw...p_planner.jspx

        Product: LPG

        From: Sydney 3000

        To: Innamincka 3020

        Show sites within: 20

        Show best prices for: 20

Will scout around and see if i can find something that works better than that?

        Cheers

Most of the fuel companies have something similar such as Shell
          http://www.shell.com.au/home/content...ausfinder.html
          or Motorcharge
          http://www.motorcharge.com.au/acceptance.aspx?
but you'd be spending a lot of time trying to to get an internet connection and deal with the websites...

Shell certainly don't seem to have much available in remote areas.

Need some feedback from LPG users who have made trips into the unknown.

Here is one that seems to work!

            http://motormouth.com.au/pricesearch.aspx

            Fuel Type: LPG

            Postcode search: 3020

Then click the "Search By Postcode" then it will show fuel servos in that area.

Hope that helps but im sure there is easier than this!

            Cheers

PS You can use "Point of interest" on your GPS but i found my self in places that no longer existed (Due to development or shut down. I think they add but never delete for progress?).

Nice try but still a metro based site.
Nothing for Broken Hill (2880) for example.

Gotta be something out there somewhere.

I recently did a trip with a guy with a dual fuel Challenger (Madigan's Line) one of the toughest longest and most remote trips without fuel in Australia, so the short answer is yes it is workable.

Having said that he stopped 5 times as often for fuel as the diesels he was travelling with and also needed others to cart extra fuel for him to cross the desert, workable if you have mates that can help and don't mind stopping at every other town for gas!

Once you get into the more remote areas gas is unheard of.

                Cheers Andrew

If you haven't bought a Prado yet but are looking for a vehicle with a long fuel range and is friendly on fuel consumption and more versatile for fuel availability then the D4D on LPG is a good choice as you get to keep your 180ltr of diesel with the extra LPG that gives more power/fuel consumption increase and if LPG runs out you just keep going

There is always a diesel running around some where in remote areas and they are more likely to part with some fuel than a petrol.

                  EG: Road trains.

Admittedly (Road trains) will probably be running B20 diesel but i reckon B20 is better than nothing if your are going know where fast

Just an option to look at but a personnel choice at the end of the day.

                  Cheers

Already have a diesel Prado but we're looking at a 2nd 4x4 as we have 3 teenage boys and its just doesn't all fit. Unfortunately they aren't quite old enough to buy their own car (or old enough to leave home)...

The 120 we are looking at has unfortunately had the sub tank removed to fit in the LPG so only 90L of petrol onboard.

Haven't heard of B20 diesel before. I'll have to look it up

                    Andrew:

Here is another web sight that locates sevo's in your areas of interest but you would have to ring ahead (They provide phone numbers to the sevo's in question) to see if they sold LPG

i had duel fuel on my old triton been birdsville and cape york we found along as its a town there is normally gas available eg, birdsville however i pub towns don't have it, if your travelling to the cape cooktown is the last place you will find gas, however when travelling main areas we ran gas and our running costs were below the deisals but when we got remote we ran petrol with the gas acting as a jerry can for just in case.

Personally for remote bush work go Diesel.................I had a LPG 100 series which i converted and i would never have LPG again.....

It is too limiting and also when it is avaliable outback it is usually at a premium anyway..........it negates the purchase price when you use half as much any way......if around a capital city and you can get it cheap enough well then consider it for city life.............Just 100ks south of Darwin is Adelaide river township and expect to pay around $1.25 ATM and it had been over a $1.10 per ltr there for years..........

Try buying LPG at Rabbit flat or Cape crawford or Woolagarang station.........it won't happen ...........just not worth the worry IMO...........For outback touring diesel can't be beaten.......everyone has it and the added economy is a bonus.

                          Dan
                          Can I still play now I have a 200 series?........Had a 2008 120 Series D4D Manual 6 Speed...STANDARD White, Soverign Bar..........Rear Cage........Dashmat.......GX Wheels with Good Year Dura Tracs........Bilstein/Dobbo 2'' lift.....Safari Snorkel....Canvas Seat Covers.....20%tint..........55W HID Headlights.....Mudmats front and rear.....
                          22'' Lightbar......

Here is another web-sight that lists pretty much all LPG supplier's Australia wide.

Just select a product name from the icons then select the state or territory.

                            http://poweredbygas.com.au/site/supp...detail&id=0006

If there is a LPG supplier it looks like you will find it here

Also provides the PDF print-out which could be useful if no internet access.

                            Cheers
