Nissan invasion of the Simpson desert

This year marks the 50th anniversary of a Nissan crossing the Simpson. If that isn't bad enough they have decided to invade Birdsville for a week and are planning daily events and activities into the desert, including a crossing, out of Birdsville.

I would expect the traffic across the Simpson from west to east would also increase as people use it as part of their trip to the event.

I appreciate PP members probably already now about this but i was curious to hear from anyone else who was going to do a Simpson crossing this year, if this has changed your plans. I am/(possibly) was heading out next Tuesday but may make other plans because of it.

Also anyone who lives in SA who might have more info on expected numbers etc

I forgot about that, I was planning on going in the next few weeks as I can't do the races. Might have to reconsider.

I'll be crossing East to West at end of September with a group of 20. We were aware of the Nissan challenge, but it was mainly the teachers in the group who needed to go in the October holidays.

Hopefully all the Nissans will have made it by then.

My mate at work was just telling me today about it this morning. His mate is going. Sure he said they take off next week ?? Sounds like it would be a fantastic trip to do. He said its been run by Pat Callinan. Don't see it been an issue and would be great to meet up with some for a chat I would imagine ?? Cheers Steve

I'll also be undertaking a crossing in early October from West to East. We will have 5 vehicles (4 Toyota's & 1 Nissan) in the group. This should not impact the later departure. Spending a month up and around the area.

Too bad the Nissans won't make it that far!!

I try not to bash brands but I know of two TD30 Patrols that are off the road ATM. One has head issues, one with alternator issues. We all have a turn I guess.

Also remember my 1KZ having head issues, cost me 4k to fix........Would have left me stranded over the desert let me tell you, reckon I would have put a match to it lol....................Cheers Steve

I am leaving Adelaide for the simpson on the 14th so will probably run into a few of them. I will be heading from west to east so will be interesting. I cant't wait to get out there.

We are heading from Sydney area next Tuesday and were going to start the crossing on the 15th from Dalhousie but after conferring with the other members of the party we have decided not to do the whole crossing.

One of the attractions of the Simpson is hopefully some solitude I don't think we will get that with the nissan event on, but would be interested to see how you find it as that's about the same time we were going to do the crossing.

So we have decided to do a Simpson loop by travelling to Dalhousie, then onto the French line but then the Erabena track ( see the lone gum) down to the Rig road and head back to mt Dare before heading up the Finke track to Alice Springs, and come home via the Painted Desert after that

Might sound a bit extreme just to avoid some Nissan owners but the Simpson will still be there next year

What vehicle will you be in? At the moment I'm thinking of leaving on the 15th. But will be going through marree to oodnadatta and onwards.
