  • Snow trip prep

    Ok I did search this

We are planning a quick trip to the snow on the weekend and was wondering (seeing this is our first 4x4 let alone our first Satan fuelled vehicle - yes a diesel)

Is there anything special I should do to prep , I have read about alpine diesel , so I will fill up with that around Canberra or Cooma .

    What about oil

    Coolant

    And lastly the washer bottle?

Oh yeah we have a 150 altitude auto diesel.

    Thanks guys

We just came back from 1 week in the snow. (Jindabyne and skiing Perisher) got Diesel in Cooma BP.
It has alpine diesel. (ie. less wax in it) only need to add enough to make the tank mix 50% with alpine diesel to do the trick.
I didn't change the typical oil. You should already have the correct coolant mix. Washer bottle should be fine if you are parked under cover or down in Jindabyne. When parked up on the skifield carpark, it's a good idea to lift your wipper blades off the windscreen. It stoppes them sticking with the ice if the weather is not too good.

I worked in Jindy for a while, back in my mechanic days. Coolant was the main issue and since your car is new that should be fine. Yep, grab some local diesel to ensure that's in the mix while your there.

If the washer bottle freezes it's usually a minor issue and you just wait until it thaws.

Main thing to do is take it easy on the road. School hols will see traffic get congested. Sit back and just poke along enjoying the comfy ride in your Altitude. Too many try and rush it and then end up becoming a road statistic. Ice on the road is quite common and given the forecast I'd be expecting it this weekend.

Wiper blade thing is pretty much bunk. Won't hurt though.

Take a scraper of some sort to clear the windows.

Shovel to clear snow. Be careful, you don't want to scratch your tough 4wd

I've tied a rope across the roofrails to make it easier to break up the snowload on top, marginally useful.

Cops get annoyed if you drive down the mountain with a load of snow - there have been accidents when oncoming cars lose control or panic hitting your snowdrift when it eventually cuts loose.

Don't know about the 150, but I engage 4H as soon as I'm off the bitumen. Chains in the back, have never had to fit them.

While that is a good idea, chains are not compulsory at Kosi, if you have 4WD

                  Yep,

They were talking about only letting "snow rated" tyres without chains, but so far have not changed the rules.
