  • Air filters for 150 and 120 - are they the same?

Looking at replacing the air filter for the 150 petrol engine, and thinking of a K&N brand, as recommended to me.

An American company, looked up their website and found they produce an air filter for the 120 series, not sure if the filter is the same size and style (rectangular) as in the 150 series.

Is the brand any good, or are their better brands in Aus?

It is a style that requires some oil sprayed onto it to work, but do remember some years ago that some of the oil dipped ones did not work properly and dust eventually found it's way inside the engine of some vehicles.

    Thank you,
    Yowie.

As you'd be getting fixed price servicing from Windsor Toyota why bother. Would it work any better than original and wouldn't you be risking your warranty as it's non genuine?

    Cheers Jim.

I had considered that point about the servicing.

I just had the exhaust system changed 2 days ago, for a stainless back from the extractors, with a smaller main muffler and a resonator at the rear. The installer suggested a better air filter which would increase the air intake.

Have not taken it for a country run yet, but gave it one small blast on the accelerator and it is a bit quicker. The installer suggested the computer will need a few hundred kms to adjust to the new system.

Hi there Yowie, now I have searched but cant find, (was actually a video clip of it, will continue to look) but testing was done on the original paper elements by toyota and and other cheaper brands of both paper elements and the oil type and the paper ones come out on top of them all. It was conducted in labs (not pub talk). Everyone to their own but I certainly wont be using an oil foam type element in my 120 petrol. Cheers Steve

          Thanks Steve.

I know there was a few problems some years ago with the oil dipped filters, some owners used too much oil, and other did not use enough, also some left a gap when re-fitting the filter and the dust entered the engine. I DO NOT want that problem. Maybe I will leave it as is.

It was just one of those enquiries to see if anyone had any good/bad points about the oil filters.

It is only early days yet, however, I notice that I do not have to put my foot down as far on the accelerator to get it moving. The noise is up a little bit on acceleration, but not while cruising at a constant speed. The new exhaust was fitted to improve economy/power when towing the van.

          Dave.

Not sure if Im correct or not but was it you Yowie that put a post up a fair while ago about not having enough torque at lower revs when towing, you were disappointed the torque been so much higher in the rev range then your old 120 ?? Anyway if it wasnt you I drove a petrol 150 yesterday arvo. I reckon my 120 has heaps more torque off the mark and seems to pull quit well at around 2400 where as the 150 seemed to be alot higher in the rev range. Even though the 120 is not as powerful as the 150 I still reckon myn will beat it off the mark and possibly under load towing. Sure felt like it anyway. Im not talking about dragging everyone off was just comparing thats all...........Cheers steve
