  • QLD drivers and road rules

2 things that have really annoyed me since moving up here to QLD.

QLD drivers don't seem to understand what a STOP sign is, everyday I see people just drive straight through stop signs without the hint of brake lights coming on.

2nd is the give way rule when they do stop at a STOP or giveway sign, nearly had so many accidents when I am the BLUE car as below. Why is this rule so hard for people to understand????

If you are turning right at an intersection, you must give way to vehicles coming from the opposite direction that are:
    • driving straight ahead through the intersection
    • turning left at the intersection.

Vehicle B (green) must give way to Vehicle A (blue).

Am I mis-interpreting the road rules???

    Hi Andrew,

Just to make it a little more confusing ....
If car A has a slip road (turn left any time) then car A gives way to car B

From memory, once you have stopped at a Stop sign normal give way rules apply as opposed to a Give Way sign.
If it is a T intersection the give way rules are different again ....

    Just to make it interesting

Welcome to Qld!!!! Remember, it's bad luck to have a Blue car in Qld. The preferable colour vehicle of course is maroon, however any other colour vehicle will have right of way over any blue vehicle...

All over Australia, a lot of drivers do not stop at STOP signs, or give way at GIVE WAY signs.

Treat all other drivers as idiots who may collide with your vehicle at any time.

Many drivers could not drive their own finger up their own a#se, and they certainly cannot drive a vehicle with care or respect to others.

Because drivers do not have anyone to regulate them full time, in that they do not have Police looking at their driving every time they are on the road, they break a road rule here and there, now and then, don't get caught out, so keep doing it to the point it becomes second nature in their driving habits.

Mate, I love it up here in Cairns, but if you reckon Brisbane is bad, head north. They haven't found the little stick on the steering column yet and have absolutely no idea about roundabouts! Interesting in a 4wd, bloody life threatening on the treadly!

          Cheers,
          Dusty

don't plan on going into Brisbane anytime soon ;-) so no need to worry about those drivers and parking costs!! It takes enough of my nerves and patience driving around the sunny coast area. I definitely don't have the issue with people going slow, normally have people up my ar3e along Steve Irwin way and the giving way at a cross intersection really does my head in, I don't understand why people don't get the give way rules.

Anyway enough of my rant, looking forward to getting some more sunshine up here.

Well I'm from Canberra, so I shouldn't poke my nose in QLD business, but I did notice that driving on the Ipswich Mwy is a bloody nightmare. Is there not a rule in QLD that says "stay to the left if not overtaking". I also completely agree about the driving 20 km/h below the limit, in the right lane and it was in epidemic proportions on that stretch of road. Good surface though, a real smooth and quite trip nonetheless.

Try being a sales rep and driving on the road every day in QLD...

I once lived in NSW (I love Blue Cars) and I found it very frustrating putting up with the idiots who have no idea!

My patience has become very good over the years.

                Cheers,

my only issue is how slow you queenslanders drive I even had this dispute with a queenslander just north of rocky comming back from the cape we were bagging qld because of how slow they drive on the road and he spoked up and told us to stop speeding etc etc this went on for a while before we overtook him he was doing 80 in a 100 zone and he didn't say a word after that!
long live nsw where we get a warning before a speed camera.

And in NSW the traffic light isn't red until it's been red for 5 seconds. Apparently it's ok to speed through during this period of uncertainty by the red light. And god help anyone who stops on the amber - which is what you are supposed to do if you can do so safely.

is that what the amber light is for?

                        There's an amber light???
Seriously with the new led lights you can hardly notice the amber they're so dim.
Why isn't the amber much brighter, flashing even. Then it'll get your attention.

                        Cheers, Jim.

That used to be the rule but it was changed about 20 years ago. A stop sign has exactly the same precedence as a give-way sign. The only difference being that you have to stop at a stop sign.

If 2 cars arrive at an intersection, one is faced with a stop sign, the other has no control signs, the car with the stop sign has to stop and give-way to the other car.

If one is faced with a stop sign and the other faced with a give-way sign, then because the stop and give-way have the same precedence then the standard give-way rules apply, after the vehicle with the stop sign has come to a stop.

I can't say I've noticed much tendency of people to ignore stop signs at intersections, but they seem to think stop signs at railway crossings don't exist. I've even been abused for slowing & stopping at a railway crossing controlled with a stop sign.

Dont get me started on QLD drivers, apparently, as soon as you put your indicator on you have right of way........... man look what you have done now...lol, so now that I have started... You need to overtake a vehicle doing the speed limit and then drive 20k under the limit, or you barge your way past backed up traffic and then sit 20k slower than everyone else, or on multi lane highways all 3 lanes are to be 20k under the limit, then if a car has stopped at the side of the road, no matter what direction your going, you must hit the brakes hard and have a big sticky beak at the stopped vehicle.
