  • Whats the best on-road tyre, Grandtrek lovers need not apply

Ok I got my set of off-road tyres, but if I was flush with cash, what would my on-road set be?

    Cheers

good year f1 eagles, they r a directional tyre, they cost around $250 a pop for a 225/50/16. i had them on my old 5ltr vp commodore, great tyre in the wet, one of the best in the price range so motor mag says, for a prado 17 inch rim expect around around $300 to $350 a pop. or the are also bridgestone so3 they a a direct compeditor with the eagles, they r a little more pricey but on par with performance
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Stormy, i would still run an AT as the new bread of AT's are as good as any HT, then when you are doing light 4wd work you don't have to swap wheels, plenty been said on here about the 694 bridgie, their is a new Yoko At (GO12 i think)which is good and the scorpian ATR is also a good road tyre, all three could still rough it in the bush.

I agree with Hutch. I run Bridgestones 694's and wouldnt have a problem running the geolander or the Scorpion

D694's are a very viable option!

Although they are a little noisier than the OEM tyres - they seem to be just as good in the wet on bitumen and far better off-road. And of course, they are available in the OEM sizing, so no uncertainties or doubts regarding warranty/insurance.

Beware though - they are pretty ordinary in the mud (however, they are an all-terrain tyre, not a muddy)

My 694's have now done 30k and I expect to get another 40k from them.
The key to that will be rotation rotation rotation !!! The constant 4wd on the prado means extra feathering of the fronts, so make sure they get done every 10k and all will be sweeet 8)

Yep, I rotate every 5k, inline with the oil changes! (90 series after all)

Whats your thoughts on this report putting the Pirelli's on top, considering I'm after a pure road tyre only. Anyone running these?

When I bought my Prado in may last year they did not make a 17" version. Otherwise I would have ended up with them. I went for the coopers when told no scorpions, and there were none in brissy, so the bridgy 694's are what I have and I made a great choice. I still dont know if Scorpions come in 17" yet. ops:

                        StormyKnight,
                        Richard,
What tyre size are you considering? As I noticed in your vehicle description you have 265/75X16 as your fitment at the moment.

If you what a straight highway tyre the Pirelli STR would be the go.

I would prefer the Pirelli ATR which out of interest they make one with a high load carrying ratting 265/75x16 123S
When I wear out the Dunlops the ATR's will more than likely be my next tyre?

                        www.pirelli.com.au/web/car-suv-van/default.page
                        Hit SUV Products.
Then hit Summer in middle of page.
At the bottom of both pages you will find a box with the word pattern. Scroll to required pattern & hit go. On this page hit Product Data sheet (should tell you all you need to know)

You should find they make all sizes for the Prado. e.g. 265/70x16. 265/75x16. 265/70X17 & 265/65x17

Toyo is another choice if you want highway tyres.
                        Toyo Open Country H/T.

                        www.toyo.com.au/

It is always hard to put a mileage on tyres as there are to many variables, but I hope that was of some help.
                        Cheers,

Nup, I would go back to the 265/70s for the freeway. It would be easier on the car all round & its not ground clearance that I would be after.

95% of the trips the car does it to & from town (35km each way).

I'm very happy with the MT's, & expect a good life from them even though they are mostly used on road, but as I said if I had some magical windfall, what would I use as my road set to make those road trips more comfortable?

I'm not looking at a compromise tyre either....treat it like I have a shopping trolley & thats it!

                          Cheers

                            Richard,
well if it is to be 265/70x16 as a Highway tyre that narrows it to Toyo Open Country H/T's or Pirelli STR's.
Possibly Toyo being the better mileage as Pirelli the better grip :?:
I am only making this statement after 25 years in the tyre game as a truly independent tyre dealer.
I know there will be a lot of other differing opinions, but it all boils down to your choice & very rarely do people knock what they have chosen.
At least that is something that I did get to do from time to time, compare products at the same time, same venue, side by side, same vehicles.
Unfortunately that is very had for the consumers to do so it all comes down to what salesperson you trust

Have fun with your choice
                            Cheers,
                            Fazza

PS. In the past I have been a Dunlop knocker but as a highway tyre

I put a new set of Toyo Opats on my last car ('92 Surf) because a mate of mine had just replaced a set on his cruiser that had done 105,000 klms. He was so impressed he bought them again on his new car and I would have to say that I couldn't fault them at all. Offroad they were not too bad really, but great on bitumen and awesome on sand / beach. If you were after a tyre that lasts a lot of klms, Opats are great.
