  • what happens when you don't service your vehicle.

A 2009 Rodeo 4wd turned up at work today. Vehicle has 93,000kms on the clock.
Turns out it hasn't been serviced since 12,500kms, and that was its first service!

Owner said it was "a bit sluggish for the past month or so and then the oil light came on".
Vehicle stopped soon after and was flat topped to the workshop.

When I removed the rocker covers the other guys came over for a look. Much discussion ensued! Imagine what the oil galleries look like! No wonder the oil light came on. Zero oil pressure tends to make that happen!
I did a comp test on the RHS bank. 0 psi on all 3 cylinders.
Comp test on LHS bank. 25 psi average.
Owner is up for about $8000.00 to get it going again.

For the kays done, it would have cost a bit over a grand to service the vehicle by the book if the owner had gone that way. Vehicle would have run better and used less fuel in that time too.

I think pics and outcome, clearly show the false economy of not servicing your vehicle.

If it was a Toyota it probably would have lasted to 150,000 km at least

I have custOmers like that, you know they don't learn a thing from it either.
Yes toyotas can go 40k between services and still run well at 300k
Imaging how long they last if serviced properly.

Ok now this is getting ridiculous.

Another one came in today. Same issues, same model vehicle (2wd this time) and same lack of servicing. This one has done 134,000kms and has not been serviced for the last 42,000kms. It is a 2007 model.
This job will cost the owner about 70% of what the vehicle is worth. That has got to hurt IMO.
                  Piccies attached.

I am off on holidays to Fraser Island next week, so won't be involved in these jobs any more. 6 sleeps to go!!
Just thought I would throw that in.

Some people just shouldnt have motor vehicles at all. I saw similar things when I worked for Toyota, was interesting when the owners thought it should be covered under warranty !!!! ha, use to laugh at them. I should send a picture of these engines to my sister, she might then service her car instead of buying new shoes then whinging when she has to replace the motor. She had 3 motors within 250k out of her corolla from not servicing it. Her theory it was cheaper to replace the motor then pay for services all the time ??? Told her all she had to do was at least change the oil and filter, if plugs and things shit them selves its just going to chug and carry on, Cant tell some people...........Cheers Steve

                      Thanks John.

5 more sleeps! Packing up the car today for a dummy run. Every time I do this I kick myself for not having made up a storage system yet. The engel always looks small until you chuck it in the back.

And yeh.... boss man is charging fair but full rate. And yes again, the squeeling has already started about cost. One customer anyway. The other customer is a decent guy and regular customer for his personal vehicles.

I also have this issue, have a customer at work's Hilux with 2.8 Diesel, came in because it didnt turn over.

After figuring out it wouldnt turn over, draining about 1.5-2L of sludge from the sump, removing the head and finding nothing obvious, pulled and stripped the engine, found No.4 big end bearing welded to the crank.

Obviously not service or even checked the oil for a long time.

Rebuilding as cheap as possible (I dont like it, just do what I'm told) but when stripping the engine, it became obvious that a very similar scenario. (paint marks on head bolts say the heads been off before, blue sealant on the sump says its been off before, aftermarket oil rings say the rings have been done, and wrecker markings on the crank say it has been replaced before as well) All in all a fairly depressing situation for a vehicle with only 180.000 odd km on it.

Yep any sort of big job like these, where they wanna cut corners is bad news, deposit sounds good to me, and no warranty if they dont want to do it properly. how hard is it to get a vehicle serviced twice a year?
but yep you cant help them.......

Even if I don't do anything else I change the oil every 5K on all my vehicle's and have done so for the last 40 years, never had any engine issues and neither have to people Iv'e sold the cars to.
