  • Turbo Timers

Good day and very new to this (also from another continent),

Have been reading this forum with interest and amazed at all the ideas, knowledge and determination!

I have a 2008 Prado GX, its an African Edition, so it has the 1KZ-TE engine.

    My first question is.....

Should I get a Turbo Timer as I was led to believe that the engine has its won mechanism for supplying oil to the turbo after ignition off?

    Second Q.........
is it easy and useful to install the Scanguage?

    Cheers everyone,

    Mick

    Hi Mick

Turbo timers are a personal thing. My prado came with one on it and it drives me crazy running around town, because I leave my car in gear and don't trust the handbrake. You just have to get used to hitting the stop button. Its handy on long trips though, knowing that oil is circulating through the turbo to get the heat out. The 1KZ is not a terribly advanced engine, I don't think it can facilitate this process on shutdown by itself.

Brett, can you still use your remote lock from your ignition key when the turbo timer is on.
                Cheers

Turbo timers are a personal thing, and personally I think a waste of time. How often do you really work the engine hard right up to the point you want to turn it off? Most times you are taking it easy for a short while before stopping so already cooling it down.

On the very odd occasion you work it hard to the very end then just sit with it idling for a short while.

                  Cheers Andrew

I'm with AJ120, with today's modern engines and some common sense after some hard going, probably have cooled down enough or just take a few minutes to enoy the scenery before turning off. As for the Scangauge, just waiting for mine to arrive this week. With the new fandangled electronic controls, I've bought mine for peace of mind, especially being in the Pilbara in the middle of nowhere, at least it will give me a place to start looking at the right system, if required. I've got a mate with a Troopy with one installed and loves it. The additional milage, consumption, HP features etc. are cool but more useful to annoy your missus and justify the buy LOL! The Scanguage won't help help with the fuel economy except to prompt the removal of some lead from the foot, if so inclined.

Hi tims, I don't have a remote so don't know about that. I used to do a lot of freeway drive so that's the reason I got one, last thing I wanted to do was sit in the car. Haven't used the timer for a couple of months but will still keep it in the prado as I'm sure I will use it again

I have the plug and play newpro turbo timer. It's to set to 1minute or 2 for when the wife has the Prado. I also like to dial mine up to 9minutes when I need to quickly go into the shop and the dog is in the car. I can lock the Prado with it running and A/C on and the dog stays happy and I don't have to worry about coming out to a smashed window from a concerned animal rights activist and its nice and cool inside still.

Hey that is a great idea, I agree. Keep the A/C on so its still cool when you get back. Might get my window smashed by a Greens candidate though...
