  • Awnings

    Hey guys,

I am in the market for an awning for the Prado but don't know where to start or what brands are the better ones.

Size wise I am thinking something around 2 - 2.5m. What I was told today is that you must have roof racks on for them to attach too and that's the only sort of mount available for them, my Prado has the roof rails running along it so I thought that the awnings would be able to mount onto those rails instead of needing The roof racks across them.

Can anyone shed any light on the mounting options available for awnings. And are there retractable awnings or are they all walk out/walk in?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated as well as brands etc.

    Thanks

You can get the awning to attach to your current roof rails, however, you will have to manufacture something up for it to fit. Price wise, could be anthing from $200 upwards, but remember that you will have to make them very strong to hold the awning steady for when you are driving and when you have it set up in strong winds. The best way is to always use a proper roofrack to mount your awning.
What rack to buy?????? depends on the awning you want, some awning manufacturers have their own roof racks, eg, Hannibal Safari, this is my favourite awning, here is the link... http://www.hannibalsafari.com.au/awning.html
You will have to use one of their roof racks, but in the end it looks much better than the cheap chinese ones.

Hey mate the awnings I sell come with the hardware and roofrails along with enough gear to mount it a number of different ways. It would be no dramas mounting directly to the rails as the bolts come out of the awning and you just need two of the supplied plates on the other side of the rails and tighten them up and your away.

I've got the Tigerz11 awning and to be honest, I would not recommend it. I have not used it a lot, but I am not expecting it to last too long. It feels weak mainly around the swivel points for the poles. It mounts to Rhino roof bars which are very well made and attach to the standard roof rails. This is on a GXL 150.

I have an ironman awning and it has been good for quick lunch stops on the beach. Not bad for the price. However just recently it has started to detach from the tracks (after 3 years of ownership). If you are going to be travelling a lot of corrugated tracks I would go something more sturdy like the Hannibal for example.
I have attached mine just by using the L brackets that came with the awning and drilling them in to a cheap set of roof racks (buzz rack) that clamp on to the gxl roof rails.
          Cheers Matt!

Thanks guys, I do have Toyota roof racks for it but I'm not a huge fan of them..

4wd supplies, they look good but do you have any pictures of what you mean about mounting them to the rails along the roof instead of on racks?

Has anyone ever heard of feather-lite awnings? The local OL store has then and they look alright and well priced. http://www.dolium.com.au/Retail_Cata...RT60_item.html

I've got the feather-lite awning. Haven't used it much but it's done the job well when I have used it. From what I understand most of the awnings on the market come out of the same factory and so are all pretty much similar.

I've got the ARB that looks as though it came out of the same factory as that one. Used it plenty of times with no dramas. It was mounted on my roof rack on my 95 series and I have transferred it to the factory rails of my 150 GXL. I made up a couple of aly L brackets (bout 8mm thick) and bolted it through the existing bolts that hold the 3 parts of the rail together. Seems plenty strong enough for general use. Would I drive down hundreds of kays of corrogations with it mounted like that? Probably not but I have a dedicated roof rack that will probably be fitted for touring and I'll attach it to that.

I have a Iron Man 2.5m. It's ok, but I'm waiting for AJ120 to build his version of the Ostrich Wing for me.
That will be the goods, I can assure you.

I think I'll go with the one I looked at today.

Do most of you go the 2 or 2.5m long one? I don't really want it to overhang but I'm sure the extra half a meter will come in handy..
