  • Portable BBQ

I've been looking for a while to buy a portable BBQ to take away camping, something with a hood like the Weber Q series. The baby Q looking like the ideal size but I wasn't keen on the aluminum construction. My brother put me on to these at Barbeques Galore ( see pics ). They are labeled GSport and are apparently made in NZ. They are all stainless steel construction, are well made, and put out plenty of heat. They only come with a grill but you could get a plate to fit or just use a frypan for bacon & eggs. Slightly larger than the Weber Baby Q in overall size and cooking area. I bought mine last week on special for $149 but they are now $299.
    Very happy with it.

I've had my Baby Q for a number of years. No good for putting a fry pan on, to cook your bacon and eggs in the morning, but great for your steaks or roast. No issues with it.

I bought a Weber plate for the babyQ for bacon and eggs and it works a treat. We use the babyQ probably more than the stove when camping.

                  Guys,
Tried it this morning at home for bacon & eggs. Turned it on high, placed my cast iron frypan on the stainless steel grill ( removed wooden handle), and closed the hood. 10 - 15 minutes later I was able to cook bacon & eggs with no problems. I did leave it running on high. If I can find the right size cast iron plate, it will work fine and I may be even be able to turn the gas down a bit. I have a feeling that it gets some what hotter that the Baby Weber Q's, as the burner pipe is substantially larger. There is a sticker on it that says "Do not use on high flame for longer than 1 hour with the hood closed."
                  Anyway, very happy with it.

Search of flebay for webber Q lists a company that cuts plates out of a "special grade stainless" that suits the webber Q series and will also make custom sizes. Have been told that the breakfast plate for the Q is a bit ordinary, any comments?

I have the Baby Q with the higher lid, but no breakfast plate. I have used a breakfast plate on the Q200. It worked fine.
I wouldn`t go stainless steel, too much work cleaning and its not non stick. cannot beat good quality cast iron.

I have a Beefeater Sportzgrill - It's a bit bigger than a Webber, but folds down to a nice size. It has enamelled cast plates (1 x grill, 1 x solid) and a wire trivet (great for the frypan etc)
We even use it at home for cooking smelly things like fish outside. I love it, but best of all, wife loves it.

We use our Webber Q220 (higher lid for roasting etc) almost more than our stove. Side tables fold in, so it is nice and compact and very economical on the gas. I also have the BBQ plate but tend to use the grill for most things.

I was something of a Weber sceptic until I bought the baby Q. Not sure which model but the one with the higher lid and temperature gauge. I also cut down a pizza stone with a grinder to fit in the hood. So when we camp we effectively have an oven to do pizza, nachos, burritos etc. As well as the usual stuff. Oh and it does a magnificent potato bake!!! Usually warm up for 10 -15 mins and then back off to min and do the cooking. About a month ago I was sick of our 4/6 burner with hood that was almost impossible to use as an oven and decided to get a bigger Weber. I wanted to get the stainless mega thing but was talked out of it by the wife so I bought the 320 (?) it's called the family Q, effectively the same as the baby but larger. The young lady at the shop said it could cook 16 people but I doubt that, unless you chop them up quite small. The family Q works like a dream, I bought the solid half plate as well. That was when we noticed the breakfast plate for the baby and bought that. Of course it had to be tested! Sad really, I seemed to have turned into a Weber addict.
