NEWS FLASH: Toyota fined $17.4m
At the end of a year in which Toyota saw fit to recall around 10 million vehicles, reports are just emerging that the marque has suffered a further blow in the USA.
Toyota has been fined $17.4m by the US authorities for failing to report safety issues quickly enough. The fine is the maximum allowed under US law – and this is not the first time that the Japanese car-maker has been hit with a US fine. In fact, it is the fourth time in just three years.
“It's critical to the safety of the driving public that manufacturers report safety defects in a timely manner,” said David Strickland of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
We’re told that car manufacturers are legally obliged to report any safety defects within five days of the defect being discovered. Toyota has apparently pledged to improve its safety procedures in future.
