  • Are VRLA batteries good for a dual battery install?

    Guys,
I'm in the process of installing a dual battery system and need to purchase a battery to be fitted in the rear of my 120.
Question ..... is a VRLA battery (valve-regulated lead–acid battery) also considered to be a AGM battery ( as some sellers are stating on Ebay ), and therefore able to be used inside the vehicle without risk of gassing oneself?

They do require a different charging regime as apposed to a normal battery ,you cant just bung the amps in to charge it otherwise you may end up cooking it

Thanks Bear63, that's good to know.

So ..... if I were to connect a 105A AGM battery via a smart controller like a Piranah DBE140S and mount it in the rear of the 120, I should not have any problems with gassing or keeping it charged, assuming that I use all the correct size cables? I also intend to charge it via a solar panel while camping.
Does anyone see a problem with this, or have I missed something? Trying to get this sorted before heading back to the High Country in April/May. Planning on staying a bit longer this time.

Because the 105amp AGM battery I have is too big to fit, plus I dont want to put any more weight in the front.

I've recently installed the Offroad Downunder tray in my 120 (petrol) which will accommodate an N70z size batt (310mm long) and am contemplating putting the FullRiver 105 a/hr in (307mm) with a thermal shield around it. My cranking batt is an Optima D27M, but am unsure whether I can run the AGM with it using only the Redarc SBI12. I've read through numerous threads and it's doing my head in as to whether I need a unit that will condition the batt on recharge as if I don't, I will kill the AGM?. My plan was to use the KISS method, but don't want to spend the money on a 105a/hr batt if it's not going to last...

                Hi,
I wouldnt put a lead acid battery inside the car as they will end up leaking as they older
the agm baterys are a dry cell battery and they also last longer when used as a deep cycle, when charging them you need to be puting in aleast 6amp in to them, I run a basic solonoid dual battery setup its in my 4th car now and i've run a few different types of battery without issue, however I recently have been advised that after a trip it is best to connect to a plug in charger to ensure the battery is at full charge (wet cell 12.65v dry cell(agm) 12.8v)you need to disconnect from the car to do this as you can easily get a false reading.
if your interested i found a battery supplier in wetheril park (r&j batteries) just before christmass where i got a 100ah agm for my trailer for $150 it appears very similar to my dual battery size I can check measurements later.

I have a 130Ah AGM battery in an Ark PowerPack DA10W. IMO, this box is a waste of money. Just get a normal battery box and fit the biggest battery you can find. I think the DA10W is the only one that can fit a 130Ah battery in it but I could be wrong.

I bought the 130Ah battery from an ebay seller and he also recommended the Projecta IC700 charger. This now gets plugged into 240VAC at all times and whenever we overnight at the holiday house. Just bring a long extension lead along.

So far, I've had a need to transfer the portable battery between 2 cars so the portable battery concept has been valuable for us.

That will do the job , but looking at that unit it doesn't regulate the charge (from what i can see)if you are going to have the agm inside the cabin probably a dc/dc charger is what you should have as you don't want an agm getting over charged and gassing inside the cabin
