The first thing I ever drove was a 3 tonne crane in my old mans wrecking yard, I wasn't that much older than him, maybe 9 or 10 years old at the time

He was working like a seasoned driver. Obviously been doing that for some time.

I started driving heavy trucks long distance at 13 or 14. I drove at night only while the old man in the passengers seat was having a snooze as I drove for hours swapping only before large towns or once he had a rest.

I wouldn't let my 13 son drive me, what trust.

Funny when I went for my licence on my 18th birthday the officer just look at me after 10 minutes with a grin and said something like, "' let's head back and get your licence son".

Yes we all drove something when we were kids, but they were different times then, WPH&S would kick your ass if you let that happen now, and you would be lucky to keep your job.

A mate of mine went over to China's north to train managers on an underground heavy metals mine. The mine went 1.5km horizontally into the base of a mountain where it then did a right angle turn and proceeded another 3km. They couldn't understand why workers were dying on the job. No ventilation was provided. Miners had candles on their hard hats for illumination. Explosions from gas and dust buildup were constant. But, as long as you bribed the cops and soldiers with alcohol, prostitutes and cash then business went on happily. He eventually gave up because safety was not on their strategies for a profitable business.
