  • Do you unload or not unload?

Question for all bush bashing prado drivers!
I leave all my recovery gear; compressors. ..max tracks. ...roo jack...shovel.....ropes...fridges...I mean everything!....

Question is....what do you take off around town or leave on 100% of the time?

  • #2
Everything comes out when I'm in town (Kal). Especially the fridge as I like to give it a clean and a good airing in between trips. It's also good practice checking all the gear as you put it back in. It doesn't really take that long once you have a system of what goes where.

My fridge was always in my old car and will be in the 150 once the dual battery is in.
      Basic recovery gear is to.
I got a call on the way to work one day asking me to go and pull a work mate out of a ditch after he hit a roo and spun.

I like to unload :-) and give my toy a good clean up.
But also like to leave the fridge in sometimes as it can be handy on a hot day.
Always have winch controller and tree strap never know.........
I chose different gear depending on where I'm going so I start fresh for each trip.

maybe a bit different up here.

i have everything on board bar the fridge. the only time i unload is to hose the snatch or anything else thats dirty. (no inuendo intended)

i have a space case in the back, recovery gear, max trax and a good size two drawer tool box with a small version of my garage tool set.

i have the 18v makita rattle gun on board and charger (via inverter) and the drill with bits and pieces when needed. not much room left in the back, but i don't have drawers yet.

Mine stays loaded, clean what needs cleaning after each trip and re pack everything. The exception is my second fridge, that only goes in for big trips.

            Cheers Andrew

i take everything out....i keep a snatch strap in the storage compartment always but space is a premium when you have kids, play golf and surf..... plus i still have the dickie seats still in so no drawers. i used to carry stuff in the drawers in past 4bees but not this time.

actually i do always have the tyre deflator and hand held UHF's in the glovebox though

Im a minimalist hiker/camper so my gear is all extremely small, light, and there isn't much of it, all recovery stuff,s under the seats all the time, small tent, tarps, axe, sleeping bags, cooking gear, water, emergency food, 1st aid, spare clothes are always in there, main reason,s are we usually discover new spots while out and about, so makes spur of the moment trips easy. My prado is my B.O.V (bug out vehicle), im not some nutjob survivalist, but i do believe prevention is better than cure, and after being caught out for days due to breakdowns, floods and other in remote area,s, and discovering how hard it is to spend 3 days without food or shelter with a small child, it,s a very small hassle to have a bit of food and something to cook/eat it with, especially long life stuff you can turn over every few years. Probably takes up 2 square ft of space and means no matter what, we will be fine, could imagine fridges and all sorts of stuff could be quite cumbersome and affect ya fuel usage as well. less is more.

                  cheers

Unload, check & clean, and store it away. Why cart around the extra weight and run the risk of loosing everything if broken into, and also pay for higher fuel usage?
