  • Prado Imobiliser problem - any experts out there??? who can help me???

    My story is as follows:

    1. I live in PNG and operate treks across the infamous Kokoda Trail. In 2010, my 'Prado' broke down with a wheel problem (actually the wheel fell off) and was towed to a workshop in Port Moresby. They fixed the problem (eventually) and then asked if I would like them to look at a oil leak problem. As I was in Australia at the time I told them to go ahead.
    2. Whilst still at the workshop, the workshop and office was broken into and among other things all the keys for the vehicles were stolen. As I purchased this vehicle at an auction in Brisbane I was only ever given one key so I made sure I knew where it was. As it had a mobiliser in it, meant I could not get another one cut in PNG.
    3. Thats when my problems started. The workshop asked me to purchase a new set of keys in Australia which I did. On arrival in PNG, they put it in the vehicle and tried to start it. The local Toyota dealer went around with his briefcase to programme the vehicle but it was not to be. They advised me that I needed to return the key set to the dealer in Australia as the 'master key' was not included. Would you believe those set of keys went back and forth 3 times during 2011.
    4. Finally on a flight back to PNG from Australia I was sitting next to a guy who has a fleet of Toyota vehicles and he said it cannot be that difficult and ended up towing it to his workshop. It stayed there for over 6 months until late in 2011 when the local Toyota dealer went and towed it to 'their' workshop where it remains until this day.
    5. Its now the trekking season in 2013 and still my Prado sits in a workshop as now the dealer in PNG says 3 strikes and your out. Saying the keys purchased cannot be programmed and that it now needs a new set along with a new computer system. They are suggesting I try and find a pranged Prado and try and purchase the whole set and then bring that to PNG.

This is all getting too hard and so much expense has already been outlaid with no result. Another suggestion is that I try and find a second hand one in Australia and purchase the computer and keys as new ones for that year prado would be hard to find.

Someone suggested putting it on a boat to Australia but cost wise this is totally out of the question.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Emails received from dealer in PNG FYI

1st email: We have to replace the engine ECU when the master key is lost this has been confirmed to us by our Toyota Brisbane Technical Support.

2nd email: I suggest the best bet would be to go to your local Toyota dealer and have a chat to them as they may have access to wreckers that could assist.

    1997 Toyota Prado
    Model: VZJ95R-GKMNKQ
    Chassis No: JT11VJ9500010542
Part Required : Engine ECU J596

My son has done this but so far no luck!

Is there anyone out there reading this, who can offer a suggestion as I just want my vehicle back.

            Gday aussiepng

I would imagine it really sux that your rig has now been off the road since 2010!... I think that i personally would be a tad ticked off!

When you bought the Prado originally from the auctions at Brisbane im guessing you still have the original rego papers as you would need this as proof of ownership so that you can order the transponder unit and coil transponder with the new keys of course!

You can still buy the transponder kit as follows below but there is two part numbers depending on the built date but i believe they wont order them without the proof of ownership papers?

I had a quick look and parts are still available for your V6 Prado

            89709-60040 (04/1996 - 05/1997) $1,084.58 (UAE or Japan)

            89709-60041 (06/1997 - 12/1997) $1,080.23 (Japan only)

I do believe its not a cheap option but i would guess (Would have thought!) its the garage's duty to pay as it was in there garage when the keys was stolen!

            Hope this helps!

            Cheers

I doubt it very much that you need to replace the computer, there can only be two reasons to the problem, 1. incorrect programming/cutting of the new key, or 2. the immobiliser has failed. The immobiliser, when activated stops the signal getting to the computer. You should not be paying for any of this either, the workshop owner is responsible for it as it was his premises that was broken into.
97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

thanks again. Turns out the workshop the PNG lads towed it to was owned by asian's and once it got into the too hard basket they informed me there was nothing else they could do and asked that we tow it away in case the person who stole the vehicle came back and took the prado as well. At that point I had already purchased the new key set in Australia and made two trips back and forth to Australia as the Toyota rep here in PNG who went around to their premises to programme sated it was the WRONG set of keys. They claimed the dealers in Australia had given us a set without the main key, something about being the WRONG colour key. Australia claimed it was the correct keys and that they did not know what they were talking about.

The vehicle is now with ELA MOTORS the local toyota dealer who more or less sent me an email recently saying his bosses were getting on him for it being still in his yard.

thanks again. Turns out the workshop the PNG lads towed it to was owned by asian's and once it got into the too hard basket they informed me there was nothing else they could do and asked that we tow it away in case the person who stole the vehicle came back and took the prado as well. At that point I had already purchased the new key set in Australia and made two trips back and forth to Australia. At the time the Asian company got the Toyota rep here in PNG to go around to their premises with his programming kit. After trying to start the vehicle, the Toyota rep stated it was the WRONG set of keys and did not contain a 'master' key. Something about being the WRONG colour key. Australia claimed it was the correct set of keys when I took them back and that the PNG workshop did not know what they were talking about. So the buck just kept getting passed back and forth with no solution in sight.

I then spoke with Peter Shepherd who agreed to tow the vehicle to their workshop.

The vehicle is now with the dealers in Port Moresby who then sent me the information posted on this forum to obtain the parts required to get it going. They claimed they tried but could not find any new parts and for me to look around in Australia for a 2nd hand computer and key combination.

                  quote:
                  Hi Gail,

Tried calling but you might be out so reverting to email. (I was in Australlia)

We still have not succeeded in getting the vehicle going, we have got it started but it shuts down again. Our diagnostic machine is telling us we need the master key which we all believed is part of the kit you purchased.

I have now passed all this information to our technical support division in Brisbane to assist in identifying what we have to do next, and hopefully they will be able to sort this out for us.

I will advise when they get back to me.

                  Regards,

                  Peter

I would suggest, you receive permission from the email originator prior to posting names and the email's contents to a public forum.

                      Suggest that you remove them.

You do NOT need a new engine ECU .... Only a ECU immobiliser and a key to match .... Pretty sure old keys can be reprogrammed on the 90s
A lot of wreckers will tell you you need a new engine ECU aswell but you don't 120s the same concept but a bit more sophisticated
