  • Vehicle awnings - feedback

Hi guys, I've been busy looking at awnings (amongst many other things)' I would love some feedback from everyone. There are so many different styles out there, straight awning, wing style or just the good old tarp and poles. There are also so many cheaper options out there, I like to be able to look at the quality and construction of what I'm buying.

Something like what brand do you have, what size and any pros and cons, such as mounting to the rack, poles and fixtures. And most importantly would you buy another one.

    Cheers JPH

I have had an ARB awning for over 5 years and love it. It takes less than 2 mins to erect and with pegs and ropes is very stable in the wind. I have replaced the rivets that hold the awning to the main aluminium mounting frame with bolts as some rivets have failed due to vibrtaions over many many km of off tar road use.

From the research I've done, I found Tigerz at about $199.
Lots of ppl have them or ironman
      They are happy with those.
One dudes ironman started to fall apart, it needed some re riveting all good now.

how much are the arb ones?

I dont normaly advocate arb for reasons known BUT!...ive got two of theirs one 2.5m and one 1.4m....brilliant....ive noticed the cheaper ones are just that...cheaper canvas...when a productin predominantly canvas....you need good canvas. Im not saying the arb canvas is the best but it is a little thicker than some cheaper ones but there may be thicker out there but may not roll up as good...the frame is self supporting 90%...for a straight out from vehicle design id buy them again...poor points are canvas can puncture if exposed to constant rubbing on join points....yes you could buy custom awning canvas in 14oz or higher with mildew treatment but it might be hard to roll into a tight package...they all have their strengths as you will see from further posts....please walk into three or four competitors and roll them out and then back..then feel the canvas durability in your hands....ive seen recently two cheaper ones up close...not impressed with pole design or shroud. ...my wish is for a non big name brand competitor to release a better product that is cost effective as well... (now a hush decends onto the forum as the pagan forum gods recite pros and cons and endorse products that only gods can afford.....ssssshhhhh AJ120 approaches. ..)

I just bought one of these, bolted straight to the side of my rack, no brackets used
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-5M-AWNI...item41721a01e2
(got it for $191.00) it came today. I've mounted it but haven't opened it yet as it was getting too dark. I will set it up hopefully tomorrow and will let you know what I think of it.

Have a look at the Supapeg's Stand Easy Deluxe awning. Solid design, Australian made (rare these days) made from Dyna Proof Canvas. The stand easy doesn't require ropes unless your at the beach as the pegs secure the 2 poles at the bottom. It may cost a little more than the others, but I prefer to support local product where possible... I've got the 2.5 x 2m and wouldn't hesitate to buy another one (not that I think I'll ever need too....)

Did you go for the 2.0 m or the 2.5 m?

There's also one Foxwing style ones on eBay, they even use the same photo as rhino do, but doesn't actually say that they're a Foxwing. Let me know how you go.

Have a look at AJ120's Ostrich wing. I am going for the Superior Emu Wing, just waiting on that lazy bugger AJ to design and make it.....

I've got a Foxwing and have say its awesome. It's been through a couple of heavy rain storms and kept us and another family dry. There's plenty of room under the canvas for 6 or so people with chairs and its really simple to set up. You need to use the poles in anything but dead calm weather but they're easy to put up and you only need the ropes in moderate of night wind.

                    Yes, I'd buy one again.

I did have a read of the thread, it does look awesome, if only AJ wasn't so busy playing with his rear end.. He could have a crack at the awning. Great looking rear bar by the way AJ. Steel isn't my friend, I'll stick to timber!

My uncle has a Foxwing and loves it too, I've read some horror stories about the knuckles breaking, sounds like you just need to set it up properly.

                      Keep it coming!

Ive broken two knuckles but it was my fault... Put it up when it was wayyyyy too windy. Good thing was they were readily available, cheap and easy to replace, which is also an important factor in any product - the repairability factor.

Hope it's ok to ask this in here, but does an awning exist that comes off the side (or from the roof rack slots) rather than the roof racks IYKWIM?
(I don't run roof racks at all, as I only have about 1/2 an inch to an inch clearance in the garage door)
                            TIA

Fair call vxwesty, that's one thing that scares me about buying cheap ones off eBay, you can't go into a dealer and order spare parts.
