I beg to differ. As mentioned in previous post, most standard insurance companies cover the car anywhere in Australia. It would only be a very, very basic policy or very, very cheap policy that would only cover on gazetted/public roads, and I'm yet to see one.

Again, if the insurance company/broker/anyone you're talking to about insurance says that off road driving is not covered, ask them to show you exactly where in the PDS it states so. And if it does, simple - go elsewhere, there are plenty of standard policies that cover you.

      Sleekr.

From the research that I have done it appears that "technically" Sleekr is correct because there is no exclusion in the PDS relating to being off gazzeted roads. However in all the research that I did I was told by RACQ, Suncorp and Swann (and each on numerous occasions) that their policies are only designed to cover cars on Publically gazzeted roads. As I said no where in the PDS did it state this, but I for one am not willing to take the chance and have to fight them on their wording so they will pay a claim, especially as they had allready told me that I would not be covered when "Off Road".

Yes it costs more for the 4WD specific policies , but I am more than happy to pay the extra to know for sure that I will be covered.
With all the research that I did (trust me it was quite a bit) I found that Shannons, TCIS, Vero and CGU had the best policies to cover everything as long as you were not doing something illegal.

I chose Vero, basically because they were the easiest to deal with. I figured that if a company was difficult to deal with when they want my money, how was it going to be if I needed their money!!!

RAC in WA cover you offroad as long as you are legally allowed to be there. Doesn't need to be a gazetted road.

And they do! I made a claim for a rear bumper that got 'bumped' while I was exploring tracks that were certainly not on any map and they had no issues with it at all. And I told them the truth about where it happened.

Going from what D4D-GXL has just added, is there anybody out there who is willing to throw up how much their annual premium is?

This would help me (and possibly others) who are still waiting for delivery to narrow down some particular insurers when it comes time for us to take the plunge...

              Cheers,

                  NRMA- $660 ish from memory.....

with regard to coverage it was explained simply as:

"is the vehicle designed to go off road?"

                  the answer was obviously "yes",

"well then you're covered, as long as your not involved in competition, racing or the like." As I was insistant on clarification she even went away and I spoke to her supervisor/manager and he agreed. I know it wasnt in writing but I felt happy to leave it there.

The other thing is to nominate your add ons as I have heard some ordinary stories of friends of mine not getting the exact same vehicle back (including accesseries) in the event of a write off or rollover etc.
                  Cheers, Martin

In my recent quote on insurance, some fine print mentioned that if an accident occurs "Offroad" then all excesses are doubled. Has anyone had any knowledge of this before in their policies?
It wouldnt really worry me as the excess covers me even if I was unluckily caught by the rising tide. Not that I plan to do this any time in the future.

                        TCIS

$598 for a 04 GLX valued at $42k including a few installed extras from TCIS . Cover Australia wide regardless of whether they are established tracks or not. I challenge any real 4 wheel driver to say they have only ever travelled on gazetted roads.

                          Hi Jim

Did ya officially tell them the BFG sizes ? What did they say? On my last truck (a Hilux) I told them the bigger size and why.. For getting on the beach access. They were cool with that.

                          Cheers,
Nope, just told them the value per tyre. Wasn't sure if their computer would start beeping a warning to the operator about OD tyre sizes :!: :?

                            Hi Jim,

My NRMA quote was quite different, which I found interesting.

I have a slightly different list of extras (which had no affect on the quote). Like you, we have unblemished driving records, windscreen cover, $500 excess, and private use. The NRMA quote I recieved was:

$932 for Market Value (replaced with new if written off within 2yrs)
$1032 for Agreed Value (I said $70K for direct comparison)

Given your quote I inquired about the difference. They mentioned the things that make a big difference is 1) a leased vehicle adds ~$100 and 2) the location the vehicle, also ~$100 3) Muliple policy further 10% discount.

I presume Coffs Harbour is much lower vehicle-risk than the Gold Coast and you must not be leasing your vehicle or you have multiple policy discount.

                            I took the $932 option.

Yep, Multi Policy Discount applied, vehicle not leased but is under finance, max no claims discount, both listed drivers aged 40+, no young drivers. I'm 25 Km from Coffs Harbour but same postcode ( I believe this is what they base their 'location' risk assessment on for insurance purposes).

                                Insurance

                                Hi Guys,
I have insurance from CGU, through Adelaide Bank (where I have the car finance). My annual premium is $466.85 and this cover is as follows-
2006 GXL Auto V6 Comprehensive Market Value
Accessories Listed - Alloy bar, spotlights, dual batteries.
                                Windscreen extention
No claim Bonus - 60% (rating one) - protected for one claim
                                Nominated drivers over 25
                                Basic excess - $250

This cover has served me well since I purchased the car new, however I just had the Bilstien / Ridepro lift done, and they will no longer cover. They stated that any lift over 1.25" will not be covered. This policy is not the Specific 4WD policy that is offered through some brokers, so I have now put in a few inquiries into the other options. Has anyone else had issues with their suspension lift? Currently 2" lift is not considered road legal without engineering report, so I would think all insurance companies have an excuse to reject any claim that could possibly be related (ie rollover), and might try to reject any claim if they thought they could get away with it.
