  • Roof rack to suit 120 prado

After a roof rack to suit my 120. I have one already that I had on my lux but its definitely not heavy duty, it was from super cheap, like a wire cage, but I have just come across this one on fleabay and was wondering if anyone has used one before ?? There is also an ARB one but double the price. Is it just the brand name Id be paying for in purchasing an ARB one or would this one do the same job http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2002-2008...ht_3264wt_1220 I have the genuine bars that go across roof to suit my current rack where as the two Ive mentioned above on ebay bolt directly into the three anchor point either side on the roof...........Cheers Steve

Do you really need a heavy duty / heavy weigth basket? The key that I have found is in the attachment. I have 4 standard roof bars on the factory lengthways rack. The basket sits on these and is attached with "U" type brackets BUT once these are done up tight I tape each of the 2 nuts on each bracket to one another so they can't come undone. Worked fine on CSR and Simpson. The aluminum looks ok but it has about a thousand nuts to vibrate loose on corrugations. The roof has , I think, a 70 kg limit anyway and my basket takes up anout 12 of those. Neil

One thing you need to find out is if the load ratings they are quoting are dynamic load ratings or static load ratings.

ive got one from tigerz111. I know they have copped a lot of flack and sure some of their gear might not be good quality but I have put it through its paces. I paid $429 brand new and they threw in a free 2x2m awning, cant complain! Its been to fraser for a week (fully loaded with about 100kg of gear) and a few double island camping trips with the same amount of gear and nothings gone wrong. It is a screw on kit using toyota factory mounts so very easy. All I noticed that was a bit rubbish was the rubber covers that sit over where it fixes in are a bit crappy so I just siliconed around them to stop water getting into the car and its been a great setup. The beauty of them is theres no need for roof rails or racks so it also sits nice and low as you can see in my avatar pic. arb ones are undoubtedly better quality but as the price reflects they should be better.

I wouldnt hesitate buying another from tigerz11, I am in no way affiliated just giving them a plug as they deserve. The link states they're now $549 but watch them because they often get to low $400's and you might get a free awning throw in.

Regarding the load ratings, it is:
            * 80kg worth of roof racks and luggage if using the factory roof rails
            * 100kg worth of roof racks and luggage if removing the factory roof rails and bolting directly to the 6 points on the roof.

So once you have decided what things you are going to carry up on the roof in terms of size and weight, and what height limits you need to stay under then you can make a better decision of which rack to get.

Are they a pain to remove the rack off and on?? As Im limited with height going into my garage I would need to remove it as soon as I was home again. Good point amts it may be better for me to get some thing that attaches to the roof racks. My model doesn't have roof rails so I would prefer to have a cage which attaches to the roof racks which would be permanently mounted to roof then just the rack would need to be removed and I cant still get in my garage with roof racks on, I think lol. Will have to check the height once the lift goes in.......Cheers Steve

Steve check the weights of the roofrack as well since this comes off what you can carry. I was looking to fit a Rhino tray to my 150 and with fitting kit the tray was 40kg leaving 40kg carrying capacity on the factory rails. Finally went for a Tracklander and including legs to go on the factory rails it only weighs 23kg. Fitting the rack on and off is a 10 minute job for two people.

The racks I looked at buying all could carry 80+kg so no problems there.

Thanks mjrndom, I was looking to day at the alloy ones today to reduce weight. This one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-1-61m...d=489443905086 is saying 80kg on the rack itself. It will mainly be our camping gear so not real heavy stuff. Heaviest would be maybe another spare and a jerry or two if we were going to do a big trip but that type of trip isn't on the agenda for the mean time....I will have to check out how much weight the roof racks can carry. I have the genuine Toyota ones that go across the roof and bolted in, not the bars like on the grande's and VX's or series 2 of the 120 that attach to roof rails I don't have that set up. I havnt even put the roof racks on yet. I bought the kit with two genuine ones in it but may need the third one which I can buy separately from Toyota. I imagine having three would be better for weight distribution and weight........Cheers Steve

Have this one at the moment which has been ok but not sure its going to cut it on the rougher stuff and cant remember what is the load rating on it. Have had a spare on it before when it was on my hilux and seemed ok [IMG][/IMG]

Steve the three bars are good for a total of 100kg.

I also have a height consideration at the work carpark hence I'm going for the newish Rhino Pioneer platform rack.

Steve, that looks the same as mine and as I said it has been everywhere with no problems but I have used 4 crossbars on the roofrails, not 2, as well as tape on the nuts.Neil

How long is that basket at the base, not at the top tube? If it is >1400mm, then it can mount on 3 bars. But it looks like 850x1200mm.

If you have heavy items, you need to tie it down to the crossbars. Light items can be tied down to the mesh. Is it 5mm wire used for the mesh?

The cheapest place to buy 3 bar heavy duty roof racks is from Toyota. It is the same as getting Rhino Rack ones but a whole lot cheaper.

It has 6 feet which stays on the roof. The legs and the crossbars are removed together. And if you attach your basket to the crossbars, then you can remove the whole lot as an assembly. It's only 6 M6 screws holding the legs to the feet.
