Hi Everyone,

Over the last few weeks (perhaps longer) we have been subject to ongoing spam attacks in the form of dodgy registrations and comment spam where bots/people are constantly hitting the site and causing far more resources to be utilised on the server than normal. This results in the server slowing down and thousands of junk registrations to trawl through to try and find legitimate ones. I've had to disable registration for the last week and joining requests are backing up.

I'm just about to put some new measures into place that will change how the site is served to visitors and should minimise some of the spam impact.

I don't anticipate any issues, but if things aren't quite what they should be just sit tight and ride it out. I'll be working on it.

Regards the new member approvals, have you considered farming some of this work out to members? I know an American welding forum I frequent has about 6 mods doing the approvals manually, they had to manual after a similar attack by spammers when they were getting hundreds everyday with the auto approval.

I am sure plenty of members would be happy to help, myself included. Having said that I am heading outback for 6 weeks starting next week, but more than happy to help on my return.

What a coincidence we were just having a discussion at the pub about spam. Mmmmmmm that delicious jelly coated , dog food like , spiced ham in a can. My mouth is watering . I'm a spammer form way back . Does that mean I can't play here anymore ?
