I ride a Motor Bike to the train station & catch an electric train to work. For my environmental responsibility during the week, I feel quite entitled to drive a 4x4 on the weekend. It tows the camper & takes me places that no car could ever go. It is purpose built & does the job well. I couldn't care less what other people think of my choices. These people probably don't even barak for the Dockers so how much do they know about anything

My answer to those who say 4x4's should be charged extra to park is simple. Parking bays are basically the same size. Therefore amini or Excel driver should be paying more for parking because they are wasting space by not using the whole parking bay.

To those who say a 4x4 is too hard to see around at intersections, I say wait for the 4x4 to pull away then you will have clear line of site and you can admire the Prado as it effortlessly pulls away from you

I also agree that skid pans should be part of your training before you get your licence.
My daughter is about to complete her licence and get her "p" plates and i have booked her in for one of these coarses already, even though she isn`t keen
Having done one of these coarses a few years back you get an apreciation of how hard it is to stop a car at 60 kms in an emergency, which would make tailgaters think twice of sticking up ya bum.

The peeve I have against 4WDs is against those 'Soccer Moms' and others who believe they are exempt from stopping or giving way at intersections, risking collision with another vehicle.

That's more a driver attitude problem and can be addressed with better driver training. It's not the fault of the vehicle itself... and that is stating the plain obvious.

The reason why I'm wanting a 4WD is to accommodate my family in comfort, and to provide the convenience we need. The fact that these large vehicles are 4WDs is a safety attribute in itself. The Prado will accommodate almost 2 families in the one vehicle. I'd bet it would emit less emissions than two Prius' and their occupants on a long trip.

AIR allows warmth to reach the polar ice caps and melt them ...
AIR causes planes to crash ... killing thousands ....
AIR causes diseases to be transmitted around the planet ....
AIR causes destructive weather patterns that kill and maim people ...

AIR IS EVIL ... Lets ban AIR !!!

Then there's some more gems of wisdom from the UK ....

If you take a look at the stats, SUV owners are more likely to drive drunk, less likely to use a seatbelt, and _much_ more likely to kill a pedestrian when they hit one.

                      .........................

A line has to be drawn they are pointless if you live in a town and have a small family they only have uses in the countryside and with people and large families. People who drive them in towns and have one child shout be led into a field and shot with a rusy arrow.

                      .........................

Actually its shown that SUVs are more likely to roll after impact and on the flat simply due to bad steering, a normal car will not do this.

                      .........................

Secondly the issue is not just the price of gas, but the damage that it does to our environment by consuming tanks of the stuff - on average 50% higher than a normal car. And yes that does apply to the idiots that drive ridiculous sports cars etc.

                      ..........................

And finally, what an utterly moronic idea is that of 'winning an accident'. Your family is safe - screw everyone else? that makes you anti-social and irresponsible. You apply this principle and cars will get bigger and bigger ad infinitum. Why not attach a missile system so you can just blast the other cars off the road - actually another dumb idea: the preventive strike.

                      ..........................

If a traditionally shaped modern car were to hit a child or adult because of the shape of the bonnet and the lowness to the ground they will partially lift the pedestrian/cyclist over the bonnet so they do not take the full impact of the car. Vehicles like lorries, 4x4 (exp those with bull pars) and people carriers which have a flatter front mean the impact is blunter there is no lift away from the impact so the pedestrian/cyclist takes the full impact. As a result 2 people hit by 2 cars going the same speed even a relativly low one will revcieve very different injuries. The one hit by the low fronted estate type will recieve injuries mainly to the legs at a low spead probably only scratches and brusing the one hit by the flatter shaped vehicle will recieve injuries to the chest and abdomen which can actually be more serious as they can invol;ve damage to internal organs which maybe life threatening.

OK ... so to do my bit to help lessen the impact of driving a 4WD I need to fit a snow-plow type of device to my pedestrian killing bull bar ... that way when I plow through pedestrians, at a crosswalk, they will be lifted clear of the blunt killing front of the vehicle and flung clear, over the roof to safety.

......... but I do like the idea of fitting a missile launcher ... for that preventative strike

                      Cheers

Chippy, we'll need to start another thread to debate the respective merits of the ARB and TJM missile launchers...

ARB's R&D department has spent years developing a steel missile launcher system to suit Australian conditions.

The TJM unit is available in steel or alloy ... but doesn't quite have the same degree of international brand recognition.

It really comes down to aesthetics ... both units are quite functional :?

I'll go for the steel version as it's more "battle-proven".

It's easier to get replacement steel missiles in the outback (especially around Woomera, I'm told).

Besides, I hate spending time polishing alloy missiles...

I feel much better knowing I will be safe when a Ford Falcon hits me at slow speed, just to get a few scratches. But I feel much more
confident walking out in front of a Mazda 7, cos I will be flipped over the bonnet, brush the windscreen, pass over the roof, and land on a scateboard.
I love this website, I learn so much..... :P

Another issue to consider when purchasing a 4WD is the difficult access due to the high floor and seats.
Thats why Chippy walkes on stilts - or should it be on water.

I think his mother was involved in "Winning an accident" then screwing her sperm doner by firstly - giving birth to the unwanted", and secondly - she more than likely was receiving child support for giving birth to a moron.
