If like Bushbasher you have a freezer that value is probably reduced somewhat but if you only have a fridge like me the sealing up the curries, meat etc is a very good option. Keep the fridge below 4 degrees and you can turn off the freezer as it isn't needed.

I do par freeze some meals like curries because they seal better (don't creep up the bag) and also sausages as it stops them being compressed into mush.

Don't restrict yourself to vacuum packing just food.

I vacuum pack the smaller spare parts and other odd components (along with a squirt of oil if needed) for my long trips. It keeps them clean and dry, and together, especially parts that have bolts screws and nuts that are essential. It also offers a bit of protection even if the seal is broken.

I just throw them into the spares/emergency box. That way they can stay there forever until needed.

Have tried clothing as well (the one-way T-shirts) but not as successful.

For longer trips, we vacuum seal sugar, rice and other things as well to replenish the containers. I have had steak and sausages last over 4 weeks just in fridge.

I have had a BIGLAND vacuum sealer for about the last 7 years... it was an ebay special.
Its been good but Im noticing that the heat sealer isn't really seally properly now.
To get a good seal I have to lean on the unit whilst its sealing...
This way the top and bottom halves really sandwich hard onto the plastic to get a good weld.

So my piece of advise is to check out the way to unit clips together when you close it up...
If it doesn't close up hard, it might not last too long.

BTW, it time for me to upgrade as well...
