HF radio smoked my internet !!

I kid you not, testing the CODAN NGT in the car today, replacing a 9323, working rather well with HFradioclub picking up my GPS beacons, things were looking great. The car was parked in the driveway and I had the laptop in the car reading the NGT manual, down goes the internet. Didn't think to much of it but when I went back inside to power cycle the router, the lights weren't behaving and it definitely had a brown smell :-)

Radio is earthed fine in the car, no problems with any other electrical items, ADSL modem was fine but the router just smoked itself. Quick check found the 12v rail shorted to ground, something definitely shorted....Borrowed a replacement and away we go !

Morale of the story, no idea....$hit happens :-)

If I sit on the drive and transmit with my NGT the two lights beside my bed flash on and off. They are the touch sensitive ones - drives the wife potty when it happens.

A friend of mine can't transmit on his driveway as it trips the earth leakage on the mains power to his house.

HF radios and high power output can play havoc with some electrics, touch lights are a classic. I have seen them activate the central locking on and even interfere with the engine ECU.

The worst HF interference I ever saw was on an aircraft once where transmitting on the HF caused the baggage compartment smoke detector to go off!

Peterpilot..oops :-) I'm a VK and have had lots of fun back in my house in Syd....80m ie: 3.543mhz caused the alarm to freak..The ICOM 706 in the car had issues on 10.120mhz, suspect i had earth loops.... Touch lights are a classic, my daughter used to complain about me turning hers on, she ended up pulling it out of the wall when she went to sleep :-)

Anyway, more playing with the NGT tomorrow but I'll take it out to Flynn's Grave..must say, quite like the radio :-)

Must say I love the NGT as well - had some issues at first as it wouldn't do LSB on the Ham bands but got it reprogrammed and very happy now.
