  • Old Habits that die hard

    I'll kick this off.

    1) Roundabouts - as a transplanted Canuck (Aussie Citizen as of 2007) still find myself the odd time looking to the RIGHT.

    2) Progressive shifting - find myself doing this in the D-4D again, this comes from my time driving "crash boxes" 7 speed tour coaches. For an explanation, the shift splits were about 600 RPM, so shifting from 1st to second would be say 1200 RPM letting RPM build until 1800 RPM, then shifting to third and letting the RPM drop to 1400RPM. Rinse repeat. Though the Detroit Diesels only had a max RPM of 2500 RPM on this particular coaches. I should add no syncro - miss a shift and everyone knows. Though the advantage is, done right you only need to use the clutch once in first gear.

I heel and toe which I don't think is a bad thing and I still double clutch downshifts when driving the ute up a steep hill. Amused the crap out of my kids. They both do it now too.

Ummm and I also left foot brake. Manual or Automatic, I have no prejudice. All comes from driving minis and other beasts with few or no synchros.

Slipping from 4th to 5th without using the clutch in the hilux 5 speed. Happens easily from 80km/h to 100km/h.

My father (born in the late 40's) used to use hand signals and indicators to signal a turn up until the day he died. I wonder how many people nowadays would even know them?

Unfortunately most of the hand signals I see these days involve one hand and one finger!

Ah yes, mostly from those demonstrating bad driving techniques.

Driving with one hand and not stopping for a yellow light (especially when we're already late for school). My eldest son is now taking notice of my driving.

                  I follow the road rules.

I also use the vehicles indicators at intersections, roundabouts and when changing lanes.

They don't teach hand signals in WA anymore. Seems they are optional for some road (ab)users.

Yea Kav I give a wave even if not needed when changing lanes but more so when you can tell they have backed off a tad to let you in even though I could have put the boot down more and got in without needing to acknowledge them. Just a bit of a thank you goes a long way. I will let most people in EXCEPT the ones that are sitting behind you in traffic knowing the lane on the left is about to run out then they make a dive for the inside lane to get one more car further in front, them type I won't let in. Just be patient and wait like every one else has to...... Cheers Steve

Hand signals are illegal in NSW. No part of the body is allowed outside the car

A good wave goes a long way. I always thank the ones who give way, and secretly curse the ones under my breath who try and fill the gap you are trying to get into
