  • FUTURE NON-D4D Prado? Opinions...

    Rather simple really. ..
The KZ has problems but has the benifet of much lower replacement and repair costs.
The KD has much greater costs in some areas and also know world wide faults that Toyo aren't recognizing here in OZ but a few PP's are considering a class action possibly.

Now there are a lot of PP's that are mechanics or offroad race drivers or very well versed in the prado its self in all series and then youve got your jo blows etc.....a lot of these persons are considering instead of purchasing another D4D engine mounted prado they are instead considering buying a V6 varient and even the possibility of "waiting" for the next engine to avoid said problems and rebuilds etc.....

My questiin is what say you members? Are you one of us that worry about the D4D doing the dirty on you and what is your opinion on Future D4D purchases......

Im thinking of waiting and keeping my KZ.... $3-4k for an injector replacement under warantee is just mean and cruel.

This is not a Name & Shame, this is a fairdinkum question about a possibility of a different engine mounted in the prado in future varients or your opinion on the cutrent one and if it will play a part in your decision to buy one knowing there is a chance of failure under warantee.

Baggs I had an injector issue with my 120 D4D at 120,000 odd km. i did not have catastrophic failure, only two injectors out of specification. Now I know that diesel injectors are a consumable but the number of early D4Ds going bang was quite disconcerting. I also went through a bit of angst when it appeared that the engine would only get two new injectors IF covered be Extracare warranty. Ultimately though all 4 were replaced and there were no signs of seat failure so the engine was good for another 120,000 plus km. While I was being mucked around by Toyota (compared to some my experience was very easy indeed) I looked at replacement vehicles. We came back to the 150 D4D. I am not a petrol powered 4wd person and all our driving styles are suited to the diesel. My opinion is that the weaker injectors are gone and the new seats are more serviceable (be aware though that Rick in NZ has seen at least one D4D with new seals that were showing signs of damage). So I went with another D4D. I will be keeping an eye on injector feedback values at each 40,000 km interval when the valve clearance checks are done. I will also insist that this is done by the book. In addition to that I have fitted a catch can so I can both keep an eye on the quantity of blowby and keep the inlet system clean. Finally I have bought an inspection camera that will allow the oil strainer screen to be checked during oil changes. I feel that this gives me enough information to know the health of my D4D.

It is my understanding that Toyota have a new Diesel engine in the wings ready for the Prado but the combination of the GFC and tsunami have delayed this until the next model Prado so it won't be fitted to the 150. Have no special contacts but this is from friends in Japan and industry news. Never say never of course because the 150 is nominally underpowered compared to others but I can understand why Toyota are keeping the current D4D.

Insightful response and very welcomed indeed.
I am cosidering "jumping" models (D4D engine) and go straight to the new one should it come to fruition....
But all things being relative all modelsmhave there problems.

Correct me if I wrong, but aren't the 1KD-FTV injectors a different design vs the 120's 1KD-FTV's?

Yes and no. Yes they are a different part number because of the way the injector fires but no the mechanical part I believe is essentially the same as the final round of 316 injectors fitted to the 120s. More than happy to be corrected by Roo, or Rick or Matt (Baileys) or SkyWalker as these are the four guys that seem to have done the most research. The 120s had three different injectors over the life of the 120 D4D here in Australia and the 316 seems the most robust of all.

Bear in mind I think there were two issues going on (if not more). The early injectors were wearing out because they weren't really suitable for service though there are probably hundreds of early D4Ds still going strong with no issues. Then there was the injector seat washer which originally was a plain copper (again to the best of my knowledge) and latterly was coated to give it more heat resistance. These original washers were still used in the early 150s. So as I mentioned above I will be insisting that the valve clearance check on my 150 be done by the book, even if I have to grease the palms a bit. That entails pulling the injectors which means new injector seats. Good for at least another 40k.

I work for a Japanese company and have a number of mates in Japan who troll the forums and newspapers for information for me. One source had identified a V6 D4D being tested supposedly for the Prado and maybe 4runner. That was a couple of years ago. The same guy told me earlier this year that all that was on hold and probably wouldn't appear until the 150 replacement was on sale. That and he mentioned that the facelift later this year is just that, different lights with DRLs and a few trim bits and a couple of minor specification changes. I suspect under different circumstances we may have seen a new D4D engine with this facelift but not now.

Well, my only wish would be to have or the ability to install a Jacobs (engine) brake - but I would think in a non-commercial application that isn't likely.

There is always the option of a refit to an existing 120 IF you want to play around with diesels?

Cummins may make something that fits a Prado

Come on over mate , get a petrol , relieve yourself of smelly hands at the bowser , embrace the POWER and RELIABILITY of the v6 . Never have to worry again about your 5000k service or your 1000k filter change or whether your annoying the crap out of your neighbours when you fire it up at 4 am and don't have to wait 5 mins for it to warm up . Gone will be the days of wondering if your engine will crap out in the middle of the desert because that last batch of fuel in the middle of buttf#* k nowhere was really hideous and has destroyed the injectors so your looking at a $10000 rebuild to continue on your once in a lifetime 2 month trip . Embrace the extra fuel expense and enjoy the freedom of knowing that in the middle of no where there will always be some young bloke with a can of unleaded strapped around his neck just willing to part with it for the right price . And that you can easily do 10 - 15 thousand Ks without an oil change without destroying your donk . And I dunno about you but there's nothing like blowing off some stupid turd in a v8 , vn commodore from the lights in your family truckster while you flip them the bird . Come on you know it makes sense , you know you want it . Petrol , petrol , petrol , petrol. Ooooooh I can see the flames now ! Where's that fan

D4D is a Toyota thing. Irrespective of what the new one is it will have the D4D badge. Hino have a couple of nice little V6 diesels that just need tweaking.

Yeah guys , I've had a daihatsu 3.5 diesel truck that never missed a beat in god knows how many ks , for those who don't know that's a Toyota with a daihatsu cab , I now have a hino with a 5.3 TI that doesn't change gears before it stops making power . I can't work out how there are so many problems with Toyota 4wd engines , apart from if they are hpdi engines which have very big problems no matter who they are made by . Usually our crap diesel . If your thinking I'm biased , I own 3 diesels , and 3 petrols currently. . Cheers just throwing a bit of accelerant on the debate, sorry I meant , BUMP
