    Ok, I see, so when/if there's a 5 or 6 cylinder diesel, it will be called a d4d?
Why don't they call the petrol a d4d?

Why not Toyota call the V8 diesel in the landcruiser a D4D. Or did you think it was just the 4 cyl 3ltr????

I believe the 4 wedged between double Ds (minds out of the gutter) refers to valves per cylinder and not cylinders.

Sorry, bank says no....And I don't think a "Truck" (Semi/Prime mover) donk would, well....umm - be supported by the frame. Even if it was, off road would be an experience! Just think of 375HP at your right foot!

Cummins make some good engines for yank pickup trucks too, not just semi's

Am in the market for a 2009-2010 Prado - these discussions makes me very nervous. Need to buy one next month. Went from diesel - to petrol and now back to diesel.

My 5.3 TI hino is a 4 cylinder , it idles ugly and with the torque factor , unloaded its hideous for traction in the wet , and gets hideous axle tramp on any thing in the dry . But seeing the eyes of the other road users when your truck is on opposite lock around a round about is always fun

I couldn't find anything except this from ToyotaUnZed.

                    http://www.toyota.co.nz/ToyotaTechnology/

So 4 stroke, 4 cycle and not 4 valves. Or 4 cylinders.

Don't be too scared, the newer ones are generally fine.

Get it checked carefully and keep to the maintenance regime posted elsewhere on this site and you will be fine.

150,000 trouble free kms on our 2006 first of the breed D4D, although the injectors were replaced at 60,000 kms under warranty. Still runs the same as it did 7 years ago. Just bought a 150 D4D to replace it and never thought of getting anything else.

Well all i can add is at work i have a Hilux with a 1GRFE done 713,000k never had the rocker covers or the injectors removed and still used no oil between 10,000k services and fuel consumption average for the last 500,000k averaged between 10.3 L per 100 to 11.6 l per 100. Can you guess which engine I am biased toward!

I take it my thread has created intrest which is good....im glad everyone is light hearted in their approach and hope it can be a "chandler board" of good info on peoples intentions on that next purchase of possibly skipping the current model for that all allusive "toyo reliability" we were used to in previous models eg; pre D4D.....

Disclaimer: if toyota actually accepted there were some issues (not always) with the current power plant...then some of us would not be so bloody nerveous about owning or buying one.....im not anti current models...but seriously toyota....accept there are issues being discussed on this forum....nuff said

well as an ex 1kz owner i cant say a bad thing about the reliability of the engine, yeah it aint a tyre frier or a axle twister but mine was like clock work for the time i owned it, over 6 years i did, 170k and all i did was a radiator, egr gasket, clutch, 2 cv boots and a fuel filler hose, as well as a battery, yeah the 5k service is a pain but its a small price to pay for clockwork, like any engine, treat it right you will be rewarded with long running and reliable engine. if all else fails get a bt 5o lol]. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.
