  • Tait 2000 T2020 UHF

Is there a UHF radio guru on the flight?

I have recently been gifted a Tait 2000 T2020 UHF radio. Its brand new, never been used. Purchased as part of a fleet install, but stayed on a shelf in its box. It was going to be thrown out but I scored it for a couple of fine ales.

Is it worth installing, or is there better to be had?

They're a great radio if you're into radios. You'll need to get it programmed by a dealer, unless you can 'find' the cable and software, for the 80 CB UHF channels as it is a commercial radio and will not have them programmed. It won't be as user friendly as a purpose built 80 ch CB UHF, for instance channel scanning, priority channel etc.

I completely agree with D4D although I might take another stance on it. He is right about it being a great radio and also a little un friendly for the user. To use as a conventional UHF I find them a right bastard. I would suggest potentially selling it someone who could use it to the extent it was designed for and use the money to purchase a Uniden or GME that will suit you down to the ground

We had Taits in our fleet vehicles until we went to Motorola digitals. Never had any problems with them. But they need proper tuning.

Thanks for the info and advice. He did mention it would need some setting up and theres features I will never use. I'm all for the KISS principle and the path of least resistance, etc...

So a Uniden or GME you say?

GME is a great brand with most of their units made right here in Australia (Sydney factory from memory)

Uniden is a great brand also, very reliable product like the GME and is made overseas and is a little more budget friendly.

I personally prefer the GME but only for the Australian made factor. Otherwise I would deem them comparable units.

I have a Uniden 7760 with remote mike. This replaced an older Uniden that was in my old 98 Prado. I still have the old one but replaced it with the newer digital 80 channel.

Yeah, GME is probably the best bet here - your only limit is budget!

There are some decent deals on eBay and Gumtree. I got my TX3800 (Commercial 25 Watt) for $270 (including shipping). But I had to get our Car Club's UHF guru to re-program for standard 80 Channels and the Clubs 5 Channels that are above the normal 80.

I've just purchased a remote head, so I can hide the main unit under the passenger kick plate.

                      Hi Beach,

The "TAIT" mobile UHF units are really good quality and if programed right are a lot better than any off the shelf GME, UNIDEN or ICOM units. Built to commercial standards, better power and temperature management. I currently use a Motorola unit and program it myself via my laptop (cable and software supplied by Motorola).

I run two Taits in the ute and truck and have a Simocco in the Prado. If you have access to someone to program them a commercial radio is fantastic. It'll give you 25 watts of output rather than 5 w of a gme or similar CB radio. So greater Transmitting power and normally a few other benefits. You will want to double check the bandwidth before you install it to ensure it covers the UHF CB spectrum.

                        Hope this helps

Correct me if I'm wrong but at 25watts you need a license? and not every antenna can handle 25watts I thought.

I have done a bit of googling and its really hard to get accurate, reliable info. Lots of enthusiast sites with spurious stuff, but nothing from any authority. The ACMA site is a nightmare.

Technically you need a licence, if you program the UHF cb channels at 5 watts, you'll be fine. Plenty of options and great audio output.
