Adrian you are right, some manual gearboxes do have an oil pump, but with the transfer there is no drive to the gearbox at all. So no risk of damage.
With the transfer in neutral give it a go. In a manual you'll get every gear but no drive, same in an auto.
Makes no difference to me either way, if anyone wants to go to the effort of removing shafts that's fine if it makes them feel more comfortable. But as a mechanic and someone who is over cautious with risking expensive damage to my beloved Prado I would bang the transfer case in neutral and drag her home with complete confidence if the need did arise.
