  • O/T - Error :Invalid character in a Base-64 string. Exploroz

For the last couple of days I have been unable to access http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Default.aspx

and get the message "Invalid character in a Base-64 string. "
together with the details of the exception, which means nothing to me.

Anyone have any clues on how to fix.

    G'day Pedro

I just typed "Invalid character in a Base-64 string" into Google and came up with a heap of techie stuff that gave me a headache.

There's a couple of trains of thought around on this one ... but the one that makes the most sense is ... the presence of spam bots in the system.

The error refers to IE checking its image of what the web page should look like .. its called the viewstate. The spam bot is attempting to write stuff in the hope that it can attach to emails and spread its message.

Viewstate sees this as a change to what the page should look like and pops up an exception error.

Most of the stuff I've found just says ... "don't worry about it .." ... which, if it is stopping you from getting to the web page, is not a lot of use.

Try refreshing the page ... and see what happens.

Run your virus checker and see if there's anything lurking in the system.

Open IE and go to Tools, Options and delete your temporary internet files .... then give it a whirl.

I know there's a couple of web wizzards on PP who may have a much better answer than this .... I certainly hope so :?

    Good luck mate.

    Cheers
    Chippy

        Yep .. same here. {I probably should have mentioned that ops: }

Makes me think there's some type of spam bot gremlin on your machine that is causing the viewstate error.

        Cheers

Forgot to mention that problem happened in Mozilla, which I use instead of IE.

Following your helpful posts I tried IE and it worked fine.

Have sent an email off to Exploroz and will see what they say.

            Thanks for the answers.
