  • Mounting a pelican case to a pioneer platform

    Hi all

I am trying to find what the best way is to semi permanently mount a pelican case to a rhino rack pioneer platform. I was hoping to not use conventional straps and to not drill holes in the case but it's looking like this may have to be the case. Being able to remove it easily if I had to would also be advantageous. I think utilising the handles with an adjustable mechanism of some sort would be good but not sure what to use.

    Cheers

    Wazza,
In some of my other jobs we have use short turn buckles from handles to what ever we were securing it too. The type used for wire cableing for fences or railings. We would use two per handle in an inverted "V" arrange ment to stop movement. One per handle is okay. But two secure it better.
I have also seen one guy made up a twin pronged hook that was the width of the handle ans used a single turn buckle to hold his trunks down.
Also going this way meens not having to undo straps to get in to trunks. Have seen people forget to do them up and drive off. Makes a fair mess when you spread your gear dwn the road at a hundred KM hour.

    SOL.

I've just purchased a pelican case myself Wazza (780 x 380 x 380) and will be mounting it at the back of my Pio Platform using the eye bolts in front of it to lie against and strapping down with a couple of ratchet straps. The cases have the grooved lids that the straps will sit in to help minimize sideways movement.

Thanks sol. Those ideas sound pretty good. Getting pretty close I think. My only worry would be security.

Thanks Craigm. That's what I was going to do initially but it's too easy to remove for people with sticky fingers.

I've got holes on the base of my Spacecase. The latches are padlocked. So it would be very hard to get the entire Space case removed. I pretty much have to empty my Space case anyway or it would be too heavy to get the box up/down.

Also it is best not to use the normal channel nuts to put into the channel of the Pioneer Platform. I use a much longer channel nut to spread the load better in the channel.

Thanks everyone who replied to this thread. This is how I decided to mount the box. It's so far appears to be extremely solid and far better than using straps. I still need to put some sort of locking device on it. Cheers

Wazza, Some of our guys would run a length of chain around the handle down to the rack and back up. The pad lock would then go through the chain end and through the trun buckle center. It would stop people loosening the turn buckle and with the chain around the roof rack it would stop the theft of trunk.
                Hope this makes sense.

                SOL.

Wazza can I make a single suggestion? Turn the hooks around (RHS only in this pic) so it faces down. That way if you are reaching up the hook cannot catch on you or your clothes. And it does happen, a hook just like one of those degloved my left hand a couple of years ago.

Wazza can I make a single suggestion as well,
If you are not going do SOL's idea with the chain, at least put a locknut
on each turnbuckle, help to lock them & any light fingers at least need a spanner.
I have seen these loosen off when exposed to constant vibration.
