  • Tyre debate...

    Hi Guys,

I have recently bought an 09 - 120 diesel. Its in need of some new rubber and I have all but come to the conclusion of the Cooper ST Maxx as I need a reasonable aggressive tyre for a trip up the centre and back through the Kimberley later in the year. However at a cost of $400 a tyre I am also now considering the Goodrich All Terrain. I have read some older posts on here relating to this old argument but just wondering if anyone has any updated views given the new cooper tread. The Goodrich I can get at $345 so you can see it's a bit of a savings. Any advice re recent knowledge would be helpful.

I would think a difficult question as very few would have experience with both brands to compare and contrast them.

both would do the job easily

Hi Waltz, welcome to the forum.

I am wondering just exactly where through the centre and in the Kimberly you will be travelling in order to need "reasonably aggressive" tread pattern? Personally for that sort of country I wouldn't be worried how aggressive the tread is rather than the overall strength of the tyre.

Probably more important even than the type of tyre is the pressure you run in it. I ran the original Grantreks on my first Prado up the Oodnadatta track, through the Red Centre and the Flinders without a single issue, when I needed new rubber I went the BFG's and their first trip was the Kimberly and they also performed faultlessly.

I am a bit biased being on my third set of BFG's, but they are going to do everything you need them to and probably then some. I am not sure what the extra $65 a tyre is going to get you!

      Cheers Andrew

Good ol tyre choice.......personally I have run BFG,Cooper,GoodYear,Kumho,Dick Cepek and a few others that I can't think of now..........BFG have been good in the past but aren't the be all end all IMO.....all the others except the Cooper did fine by me aswell........The Duratrac goodies seemed a good allrounder but I only put 11k on them before I sold the vehicle........I just put a set of Goodyear Silent Armour on my 200 series today after reading every review known to mankind.......and only really choosing them on price as Blowrepairs had them available and at over $100 off for 285 70 17's........If you can get BFG at a good price.........get them I would have but at $545 ea compared to $369ea.........my decision was financial as well as educated.

I was thinking that but didn't say it out load

I actually met Ron Moon in the Pilbara last year, if Coopers gave me the same deal they give him I would run them and tell everyone how great they are as well

$345 for BFG ATs seems a bit steep. Going rate shouldn't be more than $300. Shop around.

That all depends on what's included in the price, if that price includes fitting and balancing and disposal of the old tyre then I would say its about right. I paid $350 a corner drive away for my latest set 6 months ago, that's country prices but I was happy with that.

Thanks so far guys. They don't need to be very aggressive, just moving country and going to spend a lot of time on dirt hence AT or 50/50 type tread. I also am concerned at the hype/cost of the coppers and I guess wanted to know if they're actually worth it.

I had the older ATR's.........the sidewalls went off and you could take a good sized chunk out with you thumbnail......literally.
They had plenty of tread and were 30k old.........Was recently told by Tyrepower....."Oh yeah they did do that but not any more"...............HHmmm.........No thanks....

Seriously, look at GT Radials Savero. I have a mate who runs them on his rally car (about 5000k every year for the last 10yrs or so, up to 180kmh all over Aus backroads and desert) and also his tug and camper, and he has had one case failure (not even a rally tyre) in the latter stages of it's life. The dealer looked at it, threw it on the very small stack of others, and handed him a brand new one. I will be seriously considering them when the current Yokos (which aren't bad either and actually have a warranty, unlike Coopers) wear out. One Canadian gentleman on one of these rallys expressed surprise that Coopers were so highly regarded over here because they don't sell well in the states, and yanks regarded them as "just a tyre" and "export only"

A mine I worked at used these and were getting a good run out of them compared to the BFG they normally used........Very little chipping compared to the Goodrich. They also got good results using the Duratrac which is why I bought them last time.
