  • New 33" feet, which ones?

It's fast approaching time for me to purchase new tyres. My existing BFG MT's have stood up to 52,000km of regular abuse on rocks with dual lockers. I dare say they've had just as much time at 18-22 PSI as they've had at 37-40 PSI on road. There's chunks missing and injuries all over the sidewalls, but they're still going, except now, with a supercharger and only 10% tread left, they won't last much longer!!

I'm keen to get something different as the BFG's are known for balance issues, and I've had loads of those issues whilst owning them.

    Anyway, here's some options...

    33.1" BFG MT KM2 255/85R16 - EXISTING

    33.5" Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 255/85R16

    33.5" Maxxis Creepy Crawler M8090 255/85R16 - IMPORT

    33.4" Simex Extreme Trekker 32x9.5-16

I've always loved the look of Simex Extreme Trekkers and agree it'd look awesome.... but from what I've heard they're 100% mud tyres, terrible on road and rock.. I don't play in mud

        Hi Glen,

If I had to choose out of those, would definitely be the creepies. Would need two sets of tyres though, aren't they super soft?

You can tell by the tread design the extreme trekker are rubbish on the rocks, and almost undriveable on the road. A friend had them on a hilux before selling them shortly after. We would have to wait for him to turn up if we were convoying because the thing handled so poorly on the road he couldn't do regular speeds. Also, always loosing the bead when pressures were down and not much chop on the rocks. You could see when the tyres were turning on the rocks, those big spaces on the outside, it would grip, then let go when it fell in the gap. Just sit there sort of vibrating the car and looked like it would tear the lugs off. Never lost a lug, but they weren't on there for long.

Bighorns, another friend recently put a set on his GQ and had them on for 4 or 5 months before taking them off and selling them on ebay. He was having constant balance issues that no-one could sort out (he's in the automotive industry also so knows his stuff) and very noisy. He's had a few sets of MT's so has some others to compare to personally. Seemed to work well on the rocks and in mud though.

I'm getting the new ATZ P3's for mine after I lift it, looks like a perfect design for what i do now. Like you, I hate the mud and will avoid at all costs.

          Thanks Ben,
I've definitely been keen on the crawlers - they're meant to have fantastic grip on all surfaces. However I'm reading reports of significant balance issues, the bead coming off, and that they're so strong I'll need to run around 8 PSI or less to get any flex from them. No doubt they'd be an upgrade from the BFG's, but not sure if I actually need more grip stressing out my CV's.

Interesting that your friend had balance issues with the Bighorns - I've read that they're pretty good for balance, probably because they're a lighter tyre than others (thinner sidewall). Light would be nice, weak sidewall not so much..

            Glen,
Have you looked at the Pro Comp tyres? the Mud Terrain II that has just been released has had some good reveiws. Aparently better on rocky terrain than on mud. But they did do well in the mud too. Also apartently designed to be a daily driver tyre too.

            SOL.

Cheers SOL. I've just checked them out, but unfortunately they don't make any skinny 33's My vehicle is engineered for 255/85R16 and whilst that rare size is a pain for replacements, I prefer to stay with them. I might check into a 17" version though.

              Some prices...
              - Bighorns, $300-310.
              - BFG were originally $400 but now $355.
              - Creepy Crawler imports around $440.
