when you look at the map cairns is directly north of Bourke so its actually less distance then the coast
Along the way a lot of country towns, Highlights I guess would the pie shop at Bourke on the north side of town on your left as you travel through has the best pies I've had, been there a few times. There is the Muttaburrasauress at Muttaburra with a nice pub. and the farmer up the road who chased us off his property just after we set up camp and started cooking dinner ( honest mistake there are no fences) we were able to find free places to camp most the time.
You will have no issues with fuel I did it in triton dual cab on lpg with a range of 300klm and didn't switch to petrol until Weipa you cannot buy lpg past Cooktown.

Last time I drove up from Sydney (October 2013) I did the same but didn't go as far west as Bourke although it was tempting. Went up to Singleton, out to Moree, St George, Emerald, Charters Towers and through Townsville and home. Fuel was no issue in the diesel, I have a Star Card and could get Vortex no worries. I would avoid night driving if you don't like driving through roos and other assorted wild life. Some great pubs along the way (Mungindi on the border) but a little straight and boring in some sections.
