  • Key replacement options for a Prado 120

I recently acquired a used Prado, and I have 2 keys. The master (service) key and a duct taped remote central locking key that has the innards still in it, but has a dead battery. I would like to have 2 working keys for the remote central locking and immobiliser, so I plan on taking the taped one to Mr. Minute to swap the casing and the battery out and to get the blank cut. However, with the 2nd key, what are my options?

    1) Toyota replacement - I can go to Toyota and get a new key which will be perfect but cost around $300 - $400.

    2) eBay blank - Buy an eBay blank that has a remote transmitter inside it so that I can the carry out a series of activities in the car to instruct it to acknowledge the new key, but how does this work with the immobiliser? Is this even an option if I want to get both the immobiliser and the remote central locking working on the new key?

Are there any other options I have missed? If I have to bite the bullet and get Toyota to do it, so be it, but that would be my last port of call.

    Thanks!

    G'day Spudgun.

This has been covered quite a few times in 120 series sub forum i believe. I haven't had anything to do with this issue myself but try using the advance search on top right of main page and select all the 'search types' and in 'keywords' type ...Prado 120 key programming.

A few different threads came up for me typing that it so should get you on your way, hope this helps

eBay blanks don't usually have the remote transmitter inside them. They are just the key with a empty case

There is a guy on ebay selling a key with a transponder for $100. He says that all he needs is the 5 digit code from my existing transponder to determine if its compatible.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321310136...84.m1423.l2649

Apparently mine is compatible, but I popped into a Mr. Minute in Sydney CBD and he said that they sell transponders there. He looked up in a book the make, model and year of Prado and said that I need to go to Toyota, and that getting a transponder that doesn't work correctly can kill the ECU. Is that possible? I'll definitely just go to Toyota if that's the case.

Just rang Toyota. New key (uncut) programmed to the car, $290. It's actually less than I thought it would be.

I'd go with that as long as they use a genuine key.

                    Hi Spudgun,

I bought a blank key and transponder from glwdave (from one of the previous threads highlighted) via ebay and it has worked a charm.

The one that I bought was non genuine and I had to give him the frequency (the numbers on the back of the working transponder) but I have had 2 years work out of it with no hassles at all - I think it ended up being about $90 all up including getting the blank cut.

                    Hope this helps.

I got two of these off ebay for $5.00 each delivered to my door. I transferred the guts of it from the old keys into the new holders and then had cut at my local key shop in High St Penrith. Mister Minute wanted bloody $60 each, cost me $15 for each, worth shopping around.....Cant help with the other question. [IMG][/IMG]

I got my key with the broken case sorted at Mr. Minute. Transferred the transponder to a new key and got it cut. Works perfectly now. For my 2nd key, $200 for the legit key on eBay uncut and unprogrammed versus $290 for the same key uncut but programmed and supported by Toyota. $90 is a chunk of change, but I think it's worth it just for the piece of mind. Better Toyota mess it up than me. Thanks everyone for your comments and responses! Very much appreciated.
