  • Knows his vehicles limitations or just a pure twit

Got this one off another site where it has created two definate camps of thought.

1/ (the majority) Think that he is a bloody idiot waiting to die, cost money with a search and rescue opertation endangering the life of emergency services personnel AND NOT TO MENTION endangering the life of a child

2/ (the others) Think that it is a ballsey hard core manouvre.

It is a powerpoint formatted download. Pictures do tell a thousand words.

        I s'pose I belong in the majority ... being a dad 'n' all.

Pulling a stunt like that, with a kid in the car, just shows that he was spawned in the shallow end of the gene pool and never evolved beyond a single celled amoeba.

        Cheers

Also agree , but is it like dangling your kid that you would give your life for in front of a 4M croc (steve irwin)

NEVER UNDER-ESTIMATE THE POWER OF WATER

i lived on the beach for 28 yrs , but this guy either had an ego trip , knew the road and done it before or was completely on drugs .

losing his child , boat, vehicle and his own life over a calculated or stupid decision has obviously went thru his head , the power of water might not have !

i wouldnt have done it , as i realise what water does when it moves like that , just take the sunami in indonesia ...water in flow takes everything with it ?

But hey , that kid is going to grow up the BALLSY 4WD'ER , he'll think he's invincable

Whats his tyres , might make a good commercail !

            limitation

purely irresponsible!! Child services should get a hold of his email. It could have ended much differently, thankfully for the kid it didn't.

Not only that , he's driving across a bridge thats 7-8 meters above the water level usually , hes a meter deep to the windscreen on top of that , nevermind the dept of the river usually (talking a 10meter deep river) , HES A GONNER ! risking the lil mans life for an ego trip = IDIOT !

its not a recreational activity , a flood is a survival situation .

THE only plus is he drives a bloody toyota !

This person crossed the river about 15mins before all the tourist got there to take pictures. The river had peaked and the person who wrote the story sounds like someone who thinks 4wding is driving on graded dirt or gravel roads and splashing in puddles.

First up, I walk all water crossings before I drive through, especially with other people or expensive gear in the car.

Second up, How do you think locals who don't live in town get around in areas that flood regularly i.e. 4 or 5 times a year ?

Some FACTS: For all those who haven't towed a boatntrailer in a deep water crossing, the boat actually floats and creates minimal drag. Think how easy it is to push one around in the water. The tray back cruisers arse doesn't float either, therefore providing max traction (there is very little bouyancy in the tray). The crossing had a stable and firm bed. Just a warning, camper trailers are a completely different story - they don't float and are bogged down in crossings.

This guy is using his snorkel for the purpose it was designed and within the limits of his vehicle. Snorkels are specifically designed for over bonnet to windscreen level water crossings. If you aren't going to do overbonnet depth the normal setup if fine with a tarp. Save your money and do an advanced 4wd course.

If anyone here thinks this guys is an idiot and they are thinking of doing some of the better high country trails or going to the cape on the telegraph road, perhaps they should reconsider. For most of the year there are quite a few over bonnet moving water crossing on both tracks and the river beds are constantly changing with unstable surfaces and deep holes. For each crossing, are you going to chuck your kids out of the car do the crossing, come back and do it again ?

PS - Toyota is now using this as a sales promo

                  Neiool,

                  I have to disagree......

                  90% of what you say is correct, you are obviously an experienced off road driver,however;

                  1. The hydrolics of a 1mtr deep fllowing creek verses a 8 or 9mtr deep fllowing river are two VERY different scenarios.

                  2. He had absolutley no way of knowing what surface (or lack of) that he was driving on (it is a bridge that is normally 7 mtrs above water level)........not that you could have walked it first .......

Sorry, but as an experienced off road driver, he gets a big thumbs down from me.

The photos were in the daily news paper(online version) andd were mysteriously removed. I'm hoping the police took them off to use as evidence

                      As evidence for what?

They will have a hard time proving anything other than reckless endangerment.

If anything he will get a slap on the wrist.

The thing about this is that we weren't there so it makes it hard to speculate... However, after seeing the email Power Point the photographer says that his kid jumped out locked the hubs in and off they went without checking the the conditions of the crossing.....

As suggested above, he maybe local and is familiar with the area so has more confidence in his ability to cross a road travelled on a regular basis... I don't think I'd be too confident and blasay if I had never been through there before. We take risks everyday, usually calculated... Was this a calculated risk? without asking the driver we won't know..

As for having your child in the vehicle with you, well.... Nup, not me especially when water such as those conditions is concerned....

Even if the vehicle stalled (for some unknown reason) it would be a mission and a half to retrieve and you would need a chopper to get the driver and passenger to safety. Is that risk acceptable? Could be endagering other people in event of a rescue if required...

When I was in Kal we had some minor flooding and a guy tried to drive his Hilux 4x4 through Gribble creek which is just runoff for the the roads and he was washed 150m downstream and required SES to rescue him, luckily it was only about 15metres across. By the way, Gribble Creek actually has road crossings all the way along it due to the fact that intersects suburban streets... So, it can happen even on a suburban street!

Think I'll stop waffling on now...

If I remember correctly, driving thru a road closed sign such as this guy appears to have done, attracts a fine of around a grand per tyre, including spares. Given that he's has to have a 6 tyres on the road and probably a couple of spares, that is a considerable fine...

No matter how its put, he broke the law which means in the act of breaking the law he is responsible for everything after the fact. That means no insurance, and he would have to take responsibility of theose who go to his aid, and in the event of his son's death, he would be up on a manslaughter charge at least..... you could go on, but in the end, no matter how anyone justifys his actions, he was WRONG !!!
                              My opinion, sorry.
