120 series alloy wheel centre caps

Does anyone know why the 120 series alloy wheel centre caps fall off? Does it only happen offroad? I have just bought a set of alloy wheels from a wrecker and one of the caps was missing. So now i am searching Australia wide for a replacement from a wrecker, they are $80+ new at Toyota, of course, for a $15 part made in China. It seems they are in hot demand at the wreckers i have contacted. I have settled on $65 posted, a bit steep i know but they sell them constantly it seems. I read in previous posts that a PP'er sold a set for $80, same price as one from Toyota. Do i need to put silicone around the wire clip to hold them on?

When I had mine I didn't have a problem with them coming off when driving off road. I do remember though that the silver coating was starting to strip and the Toyota logo fell off a few. I put this down to them being subjected to wheel cleaning agents and the few doses of salty water it copped every now and again. I think this due to them being fine when I bought it. Id suspect they would get knocked around though if they were driven through ruts etc. or bogged right down in the sand possibly. I guess silicon wont hurt if your worried about it just have to break it when you change tyres over for flats and rotations etc.

I know they fall off if trying to use non genuine wheels but I have never had any of mine fall off on road or off. Make sure there genuine wheels or the new one will do the same thing. In fact Im not sure if genuine caps actually even fit the non genuine wheels ???....Cheers Steve
