  • New plug-in hybrid Outlander

Is this what the world is coming to?

It says that it has a 12kWh battery and EV mode has a range of 50km. At today's electricity rates of $0.30/kWh, that's about $0.07/km.
Last I calculated, my Prado achieves $0.21/km at 15L/100km on ULP. So roughly, the plug-in Outlander is using about 5L/100km of ULP if trying to 'compare' the 2 cars.

Its impressive but given that it is $13k more expensive than a non-EV model which does 7.5L/100km, is it worthwhile?

I guess there is a premium for this relatively new technology as with the first Prius.

I know someone who has a Nissan Leaf and he tells me that the Adelaide Council has 2 bays in a parking station in the city that provides a charging station AND free parking. So ha can take his family out on a night in town with free parking and recharge the batteries for a couple of hours.

It's good to see though that there are more hybrid SUVs entering the market. The hybrid Highlander (Kluger) from the US never made it to Oz but there is the Lexus RX400h and RX450h. The Lexus is the only model I know with a normal towing capacity. Wouldn't mind a 2nd hand Lexus RX400h actually. Pity it doesn't appear to be a proper AWD (I think) for the beach.

I like these ideas. I'm keeping an eye on the Volvo diesel plug in hybrid wagon as a family shopping car. If it ever makes it here. Can run on 3 power modes - battery only, battery & diesel or diesel only. They're also looking at the XC 60 hybrid as a concept.

Really, living in Sydney, with our second car mainly doing the school and shopping runs, an electric only range of 40-50km is easily enough but the ability to go further if required is there with a button press. But I'll wait for the price to come down a bit

I think everyone is waiting for the same!

It would take a government subsidy before the public jumps on board en-mass, similar to Solar Panels/Power. No one was interested in that at the full rack rate but as soon as a subsidy was introduced... BAM... eveyone has them!

Well, just as we were leaving Kalgoorlie back in February, I spotted a Toyota Highlander. It was dummied up with a black bonnet and black tailgate. They were doing a long run across country. Didn't realize it was a hybrid though.

12kW/h battery lasts 50km, going to need to tow a big trailer to take that many panels. Thats between 2 to 6 times what most houses have on the roof

Sort of. A 2.5kW system will be capable of generating 12kWh per day on a good day. So you will need 10x 250W panels to tow around. Large offices and carparks should put solar panels over the parking area to provide charging stations as well as shield the cars from the heat.

It actually makes good sense when you consider what most 4wd's actually get used for.

I was in Burnside Village Shopping centre today, look what I saw:

Considering I have hardly ever seen an EV in Adelaide, that was surprising...

Edit: You can check out this brand of charge stations on line. No idea if there are other brands, this one seems to be part of Origin:

                        In the central market?

I almost bought a Leaf for metro use, but Nissan messed up and then the Arizona battery capacity issues came to light. Seeing as the temps in Phoenix are quite similar to Adelaide, I decided to wait until a better EV comes along.
