  • How much does an awning weigh?

Just wanting to get a ball park figure on how much 2*2.5m awnings weigh?
I'm going to see if I can get some brackets made up to allow mounting to the roof rails with no roof racks. The brackets have to be strong enough to hold it level, even when offroad.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

I have a Rhino Sunseeker 2.5 (2.5 long by 2.0 wide) and the specifications claim it is 11.5kg. I would have thought it under 10kg but there you go.

Just my two bobs..I mentioned this idea to a couple of 4wd accessory shops some time ago....all said no way hosay. IMO, it'll be quicker (& Cheaper????) waiting for second hand crossbars off gumtree/ebay of whatever style to like! They always pop up. All the brackets are already made & available rather than 'spechul' fabricated ones!! Back to the question, I've the same awning, it's on the car but would not be >=12kgs. Hope it all works out. Thanks

I'll likely get the brackets made up for next to nothing. Just not sure if 1 rail could hold an awning as normally using roof crossbars you essentially have 2 holding it.
+ I just wanna be different

I'll be very interested to see how it turns out, esp after a lot of corrugations. Well designed brackets ( eg Traxrax..by Craigm) are a very lucrative (?) market. Point to consider, low height of the rails. You need it clearing opening doors, when rolled up and when the canvas is angled down (in use) plus be at stand up adult height. You don't want the awning roll resting on your paintwork, this is where the crossbars come in to there own. Good luck.

The roof rails are designed to transmit and support a vertical load directly into the roof structure. Hanging the awning off the rail will impose a bending force (ie pulling away from the car) which over time might fatigue and fail the rail mounts.

Let us know how you go

Keep the awning close to the rails that should keep loads down. D shaped clamp on bracket should do the trick.

Just my opinion , but I wouldn't . To much bending moment for one rail . Might look different but so might the repair bill . And yeah about 12 kgs.
