  • Red arc 1220 bc-dc battery charger

Hi guys, I tried a search, but the search results either said " too short " a word to search, or " no posts matching"
I'm running 2 x AGM optima batteries, and the Fuse that ups the alternator voltage ( off the fellow PP member ) but I find my rear light which is an led starts to flicker after a day.. I could be wrong, but to me it seems that the voltage drops off after a day or so..
Every month or so, I connect up a CTEK battery charger, and give it 3-4 days constant charge.

I've just learnt ( you tube ) about the red arc DC-BC charger and thought I might give it a go! Has anyone else got a similar setup, or are you using a DC-BC charger?

Also, does this system Do Away with the battery solenoid ?

Prado44, what led are you talking?

What is your setup, the isolator and what size cable are you using etc?

The setup you have should work much better than the DCDC would, have you measured the charging
voltages, what are you getting at the cranking battery and the aux's?

      Cheers

P44 can you sketch up the circuit so we can have a look? All batteries healthy?

Hi guys yeah batteries are healthy( purchased 6 months ago ) AGM OPTIMAS, Red for starting ! Yellow for secondary.
as for the isolator it's an older style red arc I believe. And I'm using one of your diodes Leigh. I've got a scan gauge 11 Leigh, and it fluctuates between 13.8-14.1 , so I know that it's doing it's job.
The Led is a plug in LED that fits in the standard light fitting in the rear . As for measuring the voltage of the 2 batteries, I haven't done so as yet.

Also I'm not sure if it's a normal thing, but after I have turned the car off, I wait usually 30-40 seconds , then I hear the solenoid go " click" , so I'm guessing that it shuts off one of the battery's !

I guess you have an SBi12 or similar Redarc? Also guess that it should be wired like this

            http://www.redarc.com.au/handy-hints...c_sbi_install/

I still don't really follow the LED, if you have it in a standard light fitting then it only comes on with the doors open? The click sounds like the SBi12 doing its thing which is to isolate the batteries once the main gets down to 12.7V.

Really cannot comment without you confirming (photo?) where the LED is. Sounds like the system is good so there shouldn't be any problems, might be the LED itself? Best bet is to check voltages. Redarc should connect the batteries once the main battery sees 13.2 V. See description here

The Optimas should charge fine at 14.1V, the 13.8V sounds a little low, what was the engine RPM and the ambient temperature? How many KM's has the alternator done?

I would try monitoring the charge voltage on the aux and makes sure the isolator is working ok.

As for the led flickering, not sure on that one, should just get dimmer as the battery discharges, flickering might indicate a wiring or connector issue?

              Cheers
